In 1990, UUNET launched its AlterNet service, which provided access to an IP backbone independent of the constraints of those operated by the government.
The name UUNET has lost much of its luster in the eyes of today's network engineers due to MCI's lax policies toward spam: as of December 2004, Spamhaus listed 236 known spam sources under the responsibility of mci.com.

UUnet is the largest provider of Internet backbone services, essentially the long-distance part of the Internet, used by companies that provide Internet services to consumers and to businesses.
UUNet was founded 1987 by Richard Adams Jr., a computer programmer for a government contractor who was involved in Arpanet, the government-sponsored research network that formed the core of the commercial Internet.
UUnet was first a nonprofit effort to let companies link their computer systems to the Arpanet, but it converted to a for-profit company in 1990.

Uunet's one million Pipex Dial customers will have to wait until at least the middle of the week for email services to be restored after last week's crippling spam attack.
As reported last week, Uunet was floored by a flood of unsolicited commercial email early on Thursday.
Uunet spokesman Richard Woods told vnunet.com: "We have identified where the message came from, and we are talking to the North American ISP that was used to try and identify who it came from.

UUNet, a Virginia-based company, is a major communications firm and one of the 'backbone' providers of connectivity to the 'net.
UUNet, in one form or another, is also the world's largest source of UCE -- often referred to as "bulk e-mail" or "spam" (with sincere apologies to the fine Minnesota company Hormel, Inc.) -- probably the biggest scourge on the internet today.
UUNet uses a network of service resellers that function under a shield of anonymity that UUNet provides, and given this anonymity, some of these resellers in turn provide connectivity to sources of the seediest 'business' practice on the net.

 Death penalty lifted against UUNet | CNET News.com
Usenet activists are lifting a "death penalty" against backbone Internet provider UUNet (UUNT), saying that spam from the ISP's customers to newsgroups has dropped so dramatically that the action is no longer necessary.
The so-called Usenet death penalty, or UDP, is slated to be lifted at 2 p.m.
McClain-Furmanski and others said they targeted UUNet in particular because the provider has been unresponsive to complaints about spam and because the ISP is allegedly responsible for the majority of spam on newsgroups.

UUNet last week became the first internet service provider to fall foul of tough new laws on intercepting emails.
The crucial part of the law states that it is an offence to "intentionally and without lawful authority" intercept any communication in the course of its transmission.
Richard Woods, UUNet's public affairs advisor, said the company was unaware that looking at this information without a warrant might be in breach of RIP interception rules, claiming that it constituted a grey area.

UUNet has informed MyADSL that the problem is hardware based, and that they have already updated and configured new hardware on their side.

Hundreds of thousands of Uunet's internet customers have been left without email services since Thursday after the company's Pipex Dial mail servers were brought down by concerted commercial spam attacks.
However, Uunet spokesman Richard Woods told vnunet.com that the outage began on Thursday when the company's systems were targeted with huge volumes of commercial spam containing very long cc lists.
Uunet said it currently has three engineers per mail server picking out the spam headers.

UUNet has a quality tier 1 Internet IP Backbone network as I've used them for dedicated leased line business connections in the past and they did provide a free FlowPoint Router as well as up to 512 IP address's.
UUNet then spent six days trying to ship a replacement router, which first never showed up, then got sent to the wrong place, and then got shipped ground instead of overnight.
UUNet sent me the IPs a week in advance and they were correct.

Pipex is owned by UUNET, and according to statistics compiled by spam fighting and tracking sites SpamCop and SpamHaus, more spam gets spewed through UUNET than from all the other Internet service providers combined.
UUNET now delivers 30 billion pieces of spam each year to e-mail users around the world, according to statistics gathered by SpamHaus.
But Steve Atkins of Sam Spade, a spam tracking tool, cautioned that not all of UUNET's divisions are spam friendly, and said that much of the spam that ends up in inboxes is actually sent through the downstream providers that rent dialup access from UUNET.
