Uz wrote a number of graceful lyrics in Gleim's style, and some patriotic odes; he is the typical representative of the rococo period in German poetry.
Uzes, the seat of an episcopal see from the 5th century to 1790, has a cathedral almost destroyed by the Protestants during the religious wars and rebuilt in the i7th and i8th centuries, but still flanked by a round tower of five storeys lighted by arched openings and dating from the i2th century.
Uzes has a communal college for boys, and carries on the manufacture of silk, bricks and fireproof earthenware, and liquorice, and trade in the truffles for which the district is noted.

Uzès is a picturesque town and commune in the Gard département, Languedoc, France, located about 15 miles north-northeast of Nîmes.
Here, at the source of the Eure began the 1st century CE Roman aqueduct that brought water 50 km to Nimes, of which the famous stretch is the Pont du Gard, which carries the aqueduct on splendid arches across the river Gardon.
Like many cloth-manufacturing centers (Uzès was known for its serges), the city and the surrounding countryside were strongly Protestant during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, which wreaked havoc in Languedoc.
