U-571 (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shortly after the release of the film, BBC radio interviewed a former British naval officer who had been involved in the recovery of cipher-key tables from a German submarine that was on the point of sinking; he commented that the film was entertaining, though it had nothing to do with historical fact.
A death scene was also filmed for Maj. Matthew Coonan (David Keith), but the effect did not work well so it was cut from the film Interview with Jonathan Mostow.
However, as acknowledged by the film-makers, the story of the film is entirely fictional.

 Film Review: U-571
Symbolic of the film's disinterest in the German antagonists is the misspelling of the city of Koblenz (rendered `Koblentz') in the subtitles of a German-language exchange.
In choosing a naval topic that conforms to Hollywood war film conventions, he is obligated to depict a handful of Americans battling overwhelming odds but inevitably victorious against a cruel, implacable yet flawed enemy.
But the Enigma machine in this film serves only as what Alfred Hitchcock described as the "MacGuffin," the object over which the protagonists are fighting yet whose nature is essentially irrelevant to the film.

In this film the submarines were mostly realized in miniatures, for the underwater scenes and when the sub was surfacing or diving, but for the shots when the crew is standing on the boat an actual sea-faring vessel had to be constructed with utmost scrutiny to detail.
If you expect a film that will show the horrors of war you'll be grossly disappointed, but if you expect to see a movie the promotes US heroism then you've come to the right place.
The mood, lighting and atmosphere are what made this film a standout to me. The shaking of the cabin, the espionage plot, and the conflicts of the crew were great.

 Filmtracks: U-571 (Richard Marvin)
U-571 is the first throwback to films such as The Enemy Below and Run Silent, Run Deep in a long time, and it is a patriotic tribute to the WWII era.
In the film, the score opens with a neat aquatic sound effect that was unfortunately abandoned later in the score (this cue does appear on track twenty).
Even though the film prospered from reasonable success in the theatres, the idea for an album of Richard Marvin's large-scale score was bounced around for while and eventually abandoned by commercial labels.

Hannifin who also served as an advisor on the film explains the hardship of the men on board and the importance of their missions, adding further credibility to the events depicted in the film.
Heavily used throughout the film together with the sound effects, the score is also highly directional and creates a very wide sound stage that constantly extends to the surround channels.
The film is not as dramatic a study as you may expect but it is a gripping popcorn movie at its best.

BBC News UK U-boat film an 'affront', says Blair
Tony Blair said that the film - a huge success in the US and number four in the UK box office chart on its opening weekend - was an "affront" to British sailors.
The film portrays the capture of the Enigma coding machine from a Nazi submarine - an event which changed the course of World War II - as an American rather than British, operation.

U-571 Movie Review at Hollywood Video
An uncommonly intelligent action film that combines old-fashioned heroics with claustrophobic suspense, U-571 delves into the early years of World War II and the Allied attempt to crack the Germans' Enigma code while simultaneously rescuing Matthew McConaughey's career from the mediocrity of his two previous films, EDtv and The Newton Boys.
A film as dark and murky as this one is and one that is dependent on the dread induced by sounds (particularly in the depth-charge sequences) demands a crisp, quality transfer on both counts and this DVD delivers.
This last featurette may somewhat mollify those appalled at the way Jonathan Mostow rewrote history for his film — it was the Brits, not the Americans, that snared the majority of the Enigma machines and all of those caught at the beginning of the war when their secrets were vital.

So let's forget about any ideas that U-571 is anything other than a film which chose to take a real life event and change the surrounding story to use as the basic plot vehicle for its own use, and look at it for what it is; an adventure yarn on, and beneath, the high seas.

Alan Jones captures the claustrophobia and the camaraderie of upcoming action drama U-571, the new film from Breakdown director Jonathan Mostow, which is set on board a WWII submarine.
Based on a real-life episode that occurred at the height of the Second World War, the all-action spectacular was filmed during early 1999 at Rome’s CinecittĂ  Studios, where full-size, authentically detailed submarine interiors were built; and on location in Malta, where the mid-Atlantic battles were recreated in all their explosive glory.

While the film was justifiably criticized for being historically inaccurate, the filmmakers were, as they have said, not attempting to recreate something that happened, but rather use historical events as a springboard for an otherwise fictitious movie.
But I say that during the film, you don’t notice the inconsistencies, inaccuracies, and occasional ridiculousness, because you are immersed in the world of the crew, biting your lip with anxiety, reeling at every plot-twist and ducking under the blasts of the nearby depth charges.
While the film could be accused of this (and other things), I believe that it is more accurately described as a fictitious thriller based in a WWII setting.

The remainder of the score alternates generic suspense cues with generic action cues, the latter a relentless barrage of percussion which might serve as a short-cut to on-screen excitement, but rapidly becomes tedious on disc.
