Uchronia.net: The Alternate History List - Langmaker   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The idea for creating Uchronia was first conceived in late February 1991 and much of the first version was based on information provided by Evelyn Leeper.
Uchronia moved onto the World Wide Web in 1995, but for the next two years was just a slightly modified copy of the same material that was still being posted to Usenet.
It received its current name late that year, at about the same time it was converted to the spiffy Web version you see today, which is extracted dynamically from a 1.1 MB text database.

UCHRONIA is an alternate history role-playing-game, featuring a world divided among the three Greater Powers of Britain, Russia and China.
Over time, and after the Great War, the world settled into a mild three-way cold war, with the world divided between the equally balanced Greater Powers of the British, Russian and Chinese Empires, and the various smaller, less powerful nations.
UCHRONIA is based upon Tony Jones' Monarchy World and created by OTTENS.

 Uchronia
Uchronia - the alternative history list - is an incredibly content rich look at the fascinating subject of 'what-if'; otherwise known as 'alternative universe' or 'parallel reality fiction', depending on which branch of quantum physics lights your fire.
The only criticism which could be leveled at the site is that it doesn't cover the sub-genre in movies or comics (heck, Stan Lee even had a Marvel title called 'What-If', although it only existed to allow his writers the sadistic pleasure of killing off popular super-heroes).
Uchronia's creator, Robert B. Schmunk, is to be congratulated for the most complete look at the universe of parallel reality literature in existence today.

Uchronia has an annotated bibliography of novels and stories that can fit in this category.
Other names which may be applied to the form include alternative histories, allohistories, counterfactuals, counterfeit worlds, if worlds, negative histories, uchronias, etc. Whatever it is called, alternate history somehow involves one or more past events which 'happened otherwise' and includes some amount of description of the subsequent effects on history.
Update March 8: There's now a Metafilter thread pointing to Uchronia, but it's one of those lame "what alternate history books do you like?" threads.

Vonarburg's prose is sensual and measured, richly descriptive, especially in such domestic scenes as the death of Catherine's father.
One of the attractions of uchronias is how they can present attractive worlds that are at once familiar and exotic, and Vonarburg's thick depiction makes her unique Canada seem like an alluring alternative to our world—at least until it begins to fray.
Alternate histories—uchronias, if you prefer—having exfoliated perhaps overlushly, are currently experiencing a bit of a critical backlash, akin to the downdressing cyberpunk underwent once it got allegedly too big for its britches.

The genre of speculative fiction includes the subgenre of fictitious alternative history, set in worlds in which history has diverged from history as it actually happened.
The term uchronia refers to a hypothetical time period in such a divergent world.

Uchronia: The term "uchronie", or "uchronia", was apparently first used by Charles Renouvier in an anonymous article in Revue Philosophique et Religieuse in 1857.
When someone in the audience asked why, Mark Olson replied, "We look at this as the best of all possible worlds, but the French know it isn't, because most people speak English."
