In 1666 Russian Cossacks built a wooden fortress on the steep bank of the Uda River and founded Verkhneudinsk, a town of merchants, which later became the Buryat capital, Ulan Ude.
Before the 1930s Buryatia had some 10,000 lamas and 46 Buddhist datsans, a kind of universities, where the Tibet, Mongolian and Sanskrit languages, the Buddhist philosophy and Tibet-Mongolian medicines were taught and books were published.
Buryatia was recently considered a depressive region, living on the centre's subsidies.

In Cossack foreman Osip Vasilyev's report to the Enisey commander Vasily Golohvatov dated 1666 it was stated that in the river Uda's mouth a russian Cossack contingent put up a yassack winter camp that was called Udinsky.
The camp location was well chosen both in the geographical and strategic senses: it was situated on the crossing of Russia's ways to China and Mongolia and protected by waterways and moutains which was a great advantage.
That is how it was reported about it in 1684: "Udinsky ostrog (fort) is situated between the Uda and Selenga rivers in the woodland with narrow stretches of steppe.
