He was a member of the Udall political family and was also a nephew of Spencer W. Kimball.
His parents John Hunt Udall and Ruth Kimball were in the same English literature class at the St. Joseph Stake Academy (now Eastern Arizona Junior College), and when learning about playwright Nicholas Udall, they joked that if they ever got married, that they would name their son Nick, which they did.
Udall attended Brigham Young University and the University of Arizona before enrolling in the George Washington University Law School, graduating in 1943.

Mo Udall was a longtime Democratic congressman from Arizona who ran for president in 1976 and chaired the House Interior Committee, now the House Resources Committee.

Udall started out studying accounting at the University of Arizona, but couldn't imagine spending his life crunching numbers.

When Tammy Udall’s son was diagnosed with a rare syndrome in September 2002, there was little information available from medical professionals or on the Internet.
In fact, it took until her 10-year-old son, Zackary, was nearly eight before he received the diagnosis of XXYY syndrome, a sex chromosomal aneuploidy that affects men and boys.
The support group still exists and is used to recruit new people for the study as well as “find more families and help them get diagnosed.” The board of directors of the XXYY Project – Tammy is the sole Canadian member – holds conference calls monthly, communicates through e-mail and meets face-to-face once a year.
