 | | Capstan - "A cylindrical revolving device used for hauling a cable, especially the anchor cable." (Uden and Cooper) A capstan rotates around a vertical axis, as opposed to a windlass, which revolves around a horizontal axis. |
 | | Outhaul - The line used to haul the lower outer corner of a fore-and-aft sail out to stretch it along a boom; on the jib the corner in question is the tack, and on the mainsail it's the clew. |
