 Uechi Ryu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uechi Ryu (上地流) is a style of Okinawan Karate originated by Kanbun Uechi (上地完文).
After Kanei Uechi, some Uechi Ryu schools have added additional kata, such as Shoshu, which can be included between Konshu and Seichin.
Kanbun Uechi's son, Kanei Uechi, taught the style at the Futenma City Dojo, Okinawa, and was considered the first Okinawan to sanction the teaching to foreigners.

Uechi Ryu is very much and open hand system and the only fists are pointed: Shoken (one knuckle), Hiraken (tiger paw).
Uechi Ryu is a system that uses Sanchin stance almost exclusively because it is an in-close fighting system.
I find the martial philosophy fits very much into the same philosophy as Hsing I Chuan -- "I may not throw the first strike but my strike hits them first." This certainly does NOT mean someone studying Uechi Ryu would provoke an incident or be the aggressor.

 Martial Arts Planet - Any one Heard Of Uechi Ryu?
I did uechi ryu for a long time, and from MY OWN experience, i dont think it is a very good fighting art, alot of the time you would learn a technique and then the sensei would say "Ofcourse, you would not use that in a real fight".
I dont currently do uechi and i havent for a long time, i practice another MA now, but i can tell u of two occasions where uechi ryu has saved my life in a street fight.
First in uechi u do something called kotekitai(sorry if mispelled) whiich is body toughening exercises where you and a partner hit yourselfs in your legs, arms, back, stomach, and neck in order to toughen yourself up and be able to take a punch.

On Okinawa, Uechi is considered the true successor to Mabuni’s art, but internationally, Mabuni’s eldest son, also named Kanei, is acknowledged as the head of shito-ryu and runs the Shito-kai.
