Ueno Park (上野公園 Ueno Kōen) is a spacious public park located in the Ueno section of Taito-ku, Tokyo, Japan.
Ueno Park was established through an imperial land grant to the city of Tokyo by Emperor Taisho in 1924.

Ueno Park was designed by the Meiji government primarily as a place for self-improvement – Tokyo's first national exhibition was held here in 1877, quickly followed by its first zoo and museum – rather than somewhere to relax in the open air.
According to local tradition, saplings were brought here from the famous cherries of Yoshino near Kyoto and there are now said to be 1200 in Ueno, but, with an annual crowd of over one million, that's still eight hundred people per tree.
From Ueno Station there are two routes into the park: "Park Exit" takes you to the main, west gate where you'll also find an information desk (Tues–Sun 9am–5pm); while the "Shinobazu Exit" brings you out closer to the southern entrance, above Keisei-Ueno Station, where trains depart for Narita Airport.

Toshogu-kyu stands as a memorial to the first Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and, in an accident of history, as a reminder that Ueno was the scene, in 1867, of a final stand by Tokugawa loyalists, the Shogotai, against the restoration of Imperial rule.
Toshogu shrine is dedicated to the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, Ieyasu, and was used by several generations of the Tokugawas as their family shrine.

This fountain was the very first thing we saw in Ueno Park.
This is part of the original Kanei-ji temple and subtemples that were built on this land in the 17th century (this particular part of the temple dates back to 1831).
The existence of the temple is why the area became so popular and the area was declared a public park in 1873.
