Ueno station was at one time the place from which steam locomotives chugged off to the snowy northeast, but now the Shinkansen just make a brief stop.
Ueno Park (上野公園 Ueno-kōen), adjacent to the station, is home to most of the attractions in the area, including the Ueno Zoo and a concentration of Japan's best museums.

Ueno station was the more plain looking of the three main Tokyo terminals, and served as the terminus for travel to and from the rural northern and western coastal provinces along rails that followed the old Oshu-kaido and Nakasendo post roads.
Northbound passengers used Ueno station, where track followed the old Oshu-kaido, and the Nakasendo, north- and west-ward to Fukushima, Nikko, and Aomori.

We rode the HIbiya subway line one stop back to Ueno, and stopped in to Starbucks in Ueno station for breakfast, which consisted of two mocha frappucinos, an orange cranberry muffin, and a cranberry turkey sandwich.
This ended up being on the wrong side of the station (JR's Ueno Park exit drops you out RIGHT at Ueno Park) so we walked up a long hill to the park.
Ueno has a really good zoo in general; the highlights normally are the panda (which sadly was not there) and the gorillas, which have a marveolous paddock.

An hour later I was at Ueno station (Keisei Skyliner station, as there are also JR Ueno station, and God knows how many subway stations).
Finally I got a nice map (at least the station names where in western letters) of JR Yamanote line, which makes a nice loop in central parts of Tokyo, and bought one-day ticket, which was valid for the Yamanote and couple of other lines.
Then again Ueno park, now on daylight, lots and lots of people (Saturday) celebrating last weekend of the cherry tree blooming season (wind was already ripping some of the blossoms of, but trees looked still very nice).

But Ueno is not very convenient place to access, especially from western Tokyo.

The the next morning, I took the JR Yamanote Line from my Ikebukuro neighborhood to the Ueno neighborhood, where large Ueno Park is adjacent to the station and the home of some major museums.
By the time we got halfway around the loop toward Ueno (again on the Yamanote line), the car was mostly empty and passengers were sitting (apparently the seats had been folded up against the wall during the crowded part of the loop?).
Needless to say, Shinjuku station was packed, but I was able to work my way into a position near where one of the carriage doors on the next train into the station would be opening (trains were arriving/departing every couple minutes).

 Skyliner and Narita-Express
They had already a line from their station in Narita (Keisei-Narita) to Ueno (Keisei-Ueno), which was extended to the airport.
Keisei's old airport station is still used, it is now on a branch-line and lies in the center of the Narita Airport complex and is now called Higashi-Narita (East Narita).
Unfortunately, this station did not reach the terminal, so you had to take a Keisei-bus (and pay extra for it!) to get from the station to the terminal.
