Although a monument presented to the Miyako people by Kaiser Wilhelm in 1878 in appreciation of their assistance to shipwrecked German sailors stands in Hirara City, the actual rescue took place off the coast of Ueno, southern Miyako Island.
In celebration of these Miyako-German ties, Ueno has erected a Ueno German Cultural Village, complete with full-size castle and palace replicas, museum, hotels, shops, and various other attractions.
