  Uesugi clan - The Encyclopedia
The Uesugi clan (上杉氏, -shi) was a Japanese samurai clan, descended from the Fujiwara clan and particularly notable for their power in the Muromachi and Sengoku periods (roughly 14th-17th centuries).
The mother of the Shôgun Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358) was a daughter of Uesugi Yorishige and a grandaughter of Shigefusa.
At the end of the Sengoku period, Kenshin's adopted son Uesugi Kagekatsu, then head of the clan, was a supporter of Ishida Mitsunari during the battle of Sekigahara.

 Uesugi clan - SamuraiWiki
The Uesugi of eastern Japan (their domain at one point encompassed much of the Kanto region and Echigo province) were descended from Fujiwara Yoshikado, a daijô-daijin in the 9th Century, whose descendant Shigefusa adopted the name Uesugi in the 13th Century.
By the opening of the Sengoku Period the Uesugi were represented by two main branches (a third, the Inukake, having died out in the 15th Century), the Ogigayatsu-Uesugi and Yamanouchi-Uesugi.
By dint of this the Uesugi survived the sengoku period and became a notable Edo daimyô house, although owing to Uesugi Kagekatsu’s support of Ishida Mitsunari in the Sekigahara Campaign (1600), they were much reduced in power.

Postulating a clear Uesugi victory does not seem at all unreasonable; the best the author of the Koyo Gunkan could say for the Takeda was that a draw had been achieved, despite mentioning that Shingen led a victory cheer after the battle.

This same year he was pushed once again by Uesugi Norimasa to take control of the Kanto back from the Hojo, and in 1560 he was able to comply.
A number of years later, he then took the field against the Shiina (for seeming a bit too friendly with the Takeda), and when he took their main castle in 1575, the Etchu Province was effectively under his control.

This was a terrible psychological loss for the Hōjō, since the earlier Hōjō clan, from which they took their name, had suffered their final defeat at the same location in 1333.
