Uffa Fox lived his entire life on the Isle of Wight in the heart of England's best yachting district.
Between 1934 and 1938, he produced 5 exquisite volumes of what amount to sailing vessel criticism, complete with beautifully redrawn lines, interior and structural arrangements, and commentaries, many from his own experience with the subject craft.
In the late '70's, 50 of these commentaries were collected and reprinted, with updated editor's notes, and a brief biography as the Best of Uffa.

This is because of earlier work of pioneers such as Uffa and through the use of modern designs techniques such as lighter hull materials (eg and foam sandwich hull construction which eliminate maintenance of wooden hulls) more responsive sail and design easily transportable boats (many car-toppable) simpler rigs such as Gennakers instead of complex Spinnakers.

Timed trials over a distance have now gone out of fashion and it is certain that more recent and improved versions of the Jollyboat have gone faster since 1954.
It is ironical to reflect that Uffa Fox designed the Jollyboat as a dinghy which would give him more room and time in which to move over the boat when tacking, advancing years being his reason.
It is typical of the man that the dinghy then turns out to be the fastest which he has ever designed.

What distinguished the Fairey dinghies was the method of construction earlier developed for the Fairey aircraft: a hot molding process joining multiple layers of thin wood veneers and glue to produce an extremely light and extremely strong hull.
