Topic: Ufologists

  Mutual UFO Network
Ufologists are busy collecting data associated with anomalous events, interfacing with research institutions and government agencies, dealing with the most varied populations of humans possible, lacking sufficient funding and support, and usually doing this as an unpaid second job.
All this is very frustrating to the ufologists that conduct extensive investigations, record every little detail of a UFO incident, assemble statistics, maintain vast databases, and probably most of all, respect the good and honest witnesses who report their UFO incidents.
At the same time these ufologists are unable to tap into any of this technology while investigating UFO cases and so they must be content with eyewitness testimony, trace effects, photographs and videotapes as their documentation of UFO events.

 Exo-Comment
The methodologies used by 'Ufologists' in general has been to rigorously use their professional training to work through UFO reports, photographic evidence, FOIA documents, witness testimonies, archival records, etc., to reach some agreement as to what can be known with reasonable certainty regarding UFO related evidence and the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH).
Ufologists view their research as consistent with natural scientific standards which they aggressively defend against the skepticism and dismissive attitudes thrown towards them by the scientific community in general.
Ufologists would instead focus on the credentials and empirical evidence that can be validated which in the case of controversial whistleblowers is often not possible.

The Bible UFO Connection - UFOs and the Media - Six Unexplained Encounters
Asked to pick the most credible UFO photos ever taken, ufologists select the simple fl-and-white snapshots taken by Paul Trent, a farmer in McMinnville, Ore. The photos allegedly confirm a sighting that occurred on May 11, 1950, when an inverted pieplate flying machine was seen by Trent, his father-in-law and his wife.
The photo caused a stir among ufologists because it resembled a UFO reported by pilots during their landing approach to the Teheran airport earlier in the year.
When ufologists and skeptics can't find strings, shadows or signs that a UFO photo is faked, they question the credibility of the photographer and witnesses.

The Truth About UFOlogy and Debunking
UFOlogists should be the first to debunk a UFO case and accept it.
When these solutions are discovered/proposed, we discover that UFOlogists will not be willing to accept them because it rocks the boat in their compilation of unexplained cases.
Jerry may be correct in that UFOlogists do the best debunking but when it comes to a classic case (and in many minor cases) it does not "stay debunked".

"The Failure of the 'Science' of UFOlogy" by James Oberg
Ufologists assert the existence of some extraordinary stimulus behind a small fraction of the tens of thousands of UFO reports on fil e.
The burden of proof, which customarily lies with the claimants of supernormality (or, in a criminal trial, of the guilt of the accused, who is "innocent until proven guilty"), has been shifted to the skeptics, who are in the case of UFOs required to disprove the eviden ce.
Perhaps self-styled ufologists will establish truly scientific standards of evidence, will accept the burden of proof, will produce "falsifiable" theories, and will seek to formulate their science on positive rather than negative logic.

The Lure of the Edge: CHAPTER THREE
Ufologists with scientific backgrounds such as Hynek, Vallee, James McDonald, and others would gladly have complied but for the fact that they were almost always denied the opportunity to publish in refereed journals because their subject matter was considered to lie outside the realm of legitimate science.
Some ufologists tried valiantly to shift the scientific debate away from the ETH and focus it simply on the question of whether there were anomalous aerial objects that could be usefully studied by science.
He suggested that ufologists harness that interest by promoting grassroots lobbying efforts in government and by generating more truly scholarly articles for publication in professional journals, by which scientists' interest could be piqued through "'evidence of evidence,' credibly, soberly presented" (15).

Ufologists also proposed the ground hole appeared as a result of a rare inexplicable natural phenomenon.
Ufologists tried to find the pit, but they could not find the mysterious pit - numerous trees and bushes have grown in the field.
These holes, ufologists believe, are of the terrestrial origin, although it is hard to explain why the walls of the pits are perfectly smooth and even.

The ufologists insist that an alien would have been captured by 4 firemen at 10:30 a.m., on January 20th near a wood which is located a few meters from the place where the girls would have seen their ET and about 5 hours before Liliane, Valquiria and Katia had the fright of their lives.
However, ufologists all over the world have come to the consensus that there is a widespread tendency for countries where these events take place to hide them from the public.

Sure, some ufologists have taken UFOs to heart, making a career or life-altering commitment to the things, but that is neurotic; not an escape from reality but an escape into a reality – one that is evanescent but real to those so inclined to believe.
And ufologists endlessly debate minutiae that ahs nothing to do with the UFO phenomenon’s essence, as is shown by the ongoing colloquy between James Smith and Lan Fleming inside UFO UpDates, about a shuttle flash that each man is trying to prove or disprove as a UFO.

It is a testament to American ufologists' determination and stubbornness that the same cases, for the most part, are rehashed year in and year out.
For all the disagreements regarding methodology, approach, knowledge, and content, one underlying fact remains the same: UFOs exist, in one form or another, and every ufologist, whether she considers herself a conventional document researcher, an exopolitician, or a proponent of cosmic consciousness, is seeking a similar fundamental truth: the nature of UFO existence.
If ufologists can begin to challenge the ingrained impressions and assumptions of people today, especially young people, then at least some of those people will re-align their intellectual priorities to include ufology as a viable research project.

Another common tactic of UFOlogists is to claim that the skeptic cannot prove that what was seen was not an alien craft.
Many UFOlogists think that if eyewitnesses such as Whitley Strieber, Betty and Barney Hill, or other alleged alien abductees are not insane or evil, then they cannot be deluded and are to be trusted with giving accurate accounts of alien abduction.
However, there is no evidence for this other than a general distrust of the government and the fact that many government officials have lied, distorted the truth and been mistaken when reporting to the general public.

UFOlogists should, to the best of their ability, make certain of the nature and degree of confidentiality desired or required before interviews or other information gathering begins.
