The accident, investigation and necessary repairs blocked the main railway route between London and the West Country until the morning of 16 November, subsequently operating under temporary speed restrictions to allow the bedding in of ballast.
On 1 June 2005 it was announced that an inquest into the crash would be held at the Guildhall in Windsor.
The accident occurred at a level crossing, located on the narrow lane linking the village of Ufton Nervet to the Bath Road (A4) and about 300 metres from the junction of the lane with the main road.

Ufton Nervet is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Berkshire.
Ufton Nervet village is situated in the hills above and to the south of the River Kennet, although the parish stretches down into the valley to the north as far as the A4 road.
Both lanes cross the canal by swing bridges, the smaller of the lanes crosses the railway by the level crossing involved in the rail crash whilst the other uses an overbridge.

The survivability of a rail crash is the result of a complex interaction between different forces, or the kinematic behaviour of the incident—basically, the higher the train's speed, the greater the likelihood of serious injury.
As it follows the Ufton Nervet accident, the thoughts of all of us are with the families who have been affected by that tragedy, including that of the train driver, Stan Martin, who was just doing in his job, and with Peter Webster and others whose loved ones were killed.
Member for Newbury is right to say that Ufton Nervet was the first time that there had been rail passenger casualties because of a level crossing incident for the best part of 18 years, and the incident before the one 18 years ago happened 20 years before.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the dead and injured; are thanks to the emergency and health services that as always did a fantastic job.
The cause of the crash must be fully investigated to help us prevent a similar accident happening in future — although if someone is determined to drive onto rail tracks there is only so much we can do to stop them.
Passenger numbers have been growing strongly, partly reflecting our strong economy, but also a shift from road to rail which is good for the environment and safety.

What is awful about this is the similarity with the crash that killed 10 people at Selby three years ago where again it was a car that got onto the track that then derailed the train.
The important thing to emphasise is that this is a road crash that has effectively caused a rail disaster.
It is very rare that the rail passengers get injured or killed in these sorts of incidents.
