Uist Hedgehog Rescue (UHR) is the coalition of animal groups working together to rescue and relocate hedgehogs from the Uists and Benbecula to the mainland.
UHR has consistently agreed that the Uists internationally important breeding populations of wading birds need to be protected.
It was of concern to UHR that rumours may have been circulated that the £20 reward being offered to residents of the Uists and Benbecula for each hedgehog rescued may be liable to tax.

South Uist's machair was densely populated in prehistory, from around 2000 BC until the end of the Viking period around AD 1300.
As the western coastal plain was inundated with this sand, brought up by storms from the Atlantic seabed, the woodlands covering the islands also disappeared around 2500 BC and were replaced by blanket bog and heather in the mountains and peatlands of the east.
We now know that there were at least 25 settlements from this mysterious period on South Uist's machair, with most of them grouped into three main complexes at Daliburgh in the south, Iochdar in the north (on the rocket range) and Kildonan and Bornish in the centre of the island.

Uist Hedgehog Rescue (UHR) continues to oppose Scottish Natural Heritage’s (SNH) slaughter of Uist hedgehogs, as the ‘conservation’ quango plans to resume killing these wild animals this week.
A spokesperson for Uist Hedgehog Rescue says: “It is disappointing that SNH has not yet decided to relocate instead of kill the Uist hedgehogs, in light of the increasing mountain of scientific evidence showing that this is the humane and ethical approach.
Instead, please work with the Uist Hedgehog Rescue experts to relocate these animals to the mainland where they can live out their lives.

A team of scientists from Bristol University have found that the hedgehogs can be translocated successfully after rehabilitation and that their release, onto mainland Britain, has no adverse effect on local hedgehog populations.
The survival of the translocated and rehabilitated hedgehogs proved to be very similar to the resident hedgehogs with the new animals quickly integrating with the population.
We have to move the hedgehogs from the Uists and to settle them to a natural future on the mainland.

The board of Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has decided to suspend its cull of hedgehogs in the Western Isles, The organisation is to have the animals gathered and transported from the Uists to the mainland.
While everyone recognised that the hedgehogs - introduced in the early 70s - had to go because of the impact they seemed to be having on the breeding success of ground nesting birds, the method of their removal was in dispute.
I initially took this at face value, but after I completed the interviews I did some more digging and found that some of the evidence being put forward to support the contention that hedgehogs would suffer slow and lingering deaths on translocation was based on my research.
