Ukhrul District, the land of the colourful Tangkhuls was marked out first a a Sub-Division in 1919 during the British Raj.
Ukhrul District is bounded by Myanmar in the East, Chandel District in the South, Imphal East and Senapati Districts in the West and Nagaland State in the North.
Ukhrul, the District HQ, is 2,020 m (MSL).

During the protracted war between Burma and Manipur, many Meitei families fled to Ukhrul Hills and took shelter in Tangkhul villages to escape from the oppressions and atrocities in the hands of Burmese soldiers.

Ukhrul, March 13: Ukhrul is all poised for a mega event of dedication (inauguration) of what is considered as the largest church built by a single congregation in Asia, and revival crusade beginning from March 16 to 20.
Pastor Zingnim Shimrah along with colleagues pioneered the building of the church with the capacity to accommodate standing of 10,000 people and sitting capacity of about 7,000 people, Ukhrul is all poised for the mega event with eager anticipation.
With the more than 230 villages scattered over the Tangkhul country sending at least 10 representatives from every villages/churches, vital issues are expected to be discussed in the meeting.

Ukhrul, October 14: At least six persons were killed and six others suffered serious injuries when the vehicle (Armada they are travelling) bearing registration no MN1A/6717 belonging to one Jonathan of Shingkap village met with an accident at Tolloi Phungcham Junction 22 Kms away from the District HQs at around 5 pm yesterday.
The accident occurred when all of a sudden a dark circle of cloud appeared on the scene which made the driver impossible to view the front and lost control of vehicle he was driving, according to details provided by the injured persons.
The body of the victims were brought to the Ukhrul police station and owing to to non-availability of morgue facility in the hospital the bodies are still kept at the police station.

 Tangkhul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tangkhul is a Naga tribe living in the regions around Manipur, Ukhrul District as well as Nagaland and Western Myanmar.
It is not known how Tangkhul, which is spoken by Hunphun (the traditional name of Ukhrul) village and which closely resembles the dialect spoken by the neighbouring Langdang and Shirui villages, became the most common dialect among the Tangkhuls or how it came to be called Tangkhul.
It is suspected that it largely has to do with Ukhrul as the center of education in the early part of the 20th century, as also the fact that the Bible was first translated into the Hunphun dialect which later came to be called Tangkhul.

The huge amount of rice was meant for the unemployed youths of Ukhrul district and was to be distributed under the SGRY scheme of the DRDA.
While we acknowledge that the MLAs of the three ACs of Ukhrul should be associated with all DRDA schemes in their respective area we would also like to point out that their association should not mean efforts to shield any suspect in the case of the benefits not reaching the targeted beneficiaries.
Joy may have a point here as the MLAs seemed too eager to protect the contractors from the clutches of law but what defies logic and reasoning is the prompt reaction of the Chief Minster not to arrest named suspects.
