The Ulchis, who are related to the ancient population of the Lower Amur, are a people of mixed composition, among whom tribes of Nanai, Evenk, Manchu, Udeghe, Orochi, Orok and Nivkh origin have been found.
The Ulchi language belongs to the southern group of the Manchu-Tungus languages and is so close to the Nanai language that it has been regarded as a Nanai dialect.
By the early 1960s the Ulchi or Ulchi-Russian kolkhozes had achieved a considerably high economic level and they even had well-developed infra-structures (schools, day-care centers, clubs etc).The regular shipping on the Amur that connected all the Ulchi settlements, had a favorable influence on the development of the whole area.

Ulchi beliefs of the afterlife combined those of the Nivkh (the soul transmigrated into a dog) and the Nanai (the shaman carried the spirit away into the kingdom of the dead).

Ulchi Moonduk is indeed considered one of the greatest military heroes in Korean history.
He existed in that rare occasion in history where a Korean kingdom determined the fate of a mighty Chinese dynasty and was responsibile for the fall of the latter (of course, “Korean” and “Chinese” lose their meaning as we understand them today in the context of the period).
Ulchi Moonduk’s strategy was thus the classic Russian strategy — retreat into fortified population centers, draw the enemy deeper into a hostile, harsh terrain, bleed them outside the fortifications and then counter-attack as they retreat, thus annihilating them.

The ongoing U.S.-South Korea Ulchi Focus Lens military exercise is a "grave threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," the North Korean government said Wednesday.
A dispatch by the state-operated Korean Central News Agency monitored in Seoul quoted a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying the drill "is in contravention of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration."
North Korea also demanded an immediate pullout of the 37,000 U.S. troops stationed in the South and for Washington to withdraw what the North calls "preconditions" to resuming U.S.-North Korean dialogue.
