Ulf Dietrich Merbold (born June 20, 1941) was the first West German and second German astronaut.
In 1988 NASA nominated Ulf Merbold as payload specialist on the IML-1 mission, which launched on STS-42 in January 1992.
Ulf Merbold is still working for ESA in the Microgravity Promotion Division of the ESA Directorate of Manned Spaceflight and Microgravity at ESTEC, but he is no longer a member of the European astronaut team.

In 1977, Ulf Merbold was preselected by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a Payload Specialist astronaut for the first flight of the European-built laboratory Spacelab on board the Space Shuttle (Spacelab 1).
In 1986, Ulf Merbold was transferred to the "European Space Research and Technology Centre" (ESTEC) in Noordwijk (The Netherlands) in order to support ESA in the planning of Columbus, the European contribution to the International Space Station.

Merbold was aboard Soyuz TM-20 as it docked at the Mir forward port at 00:28 on October 6, 1994.
On November 4 Merbold again squeezed into the Soyuz- TM 19 descent module, together with the EO-16 crew of Malenchenko and Musabayev, and 16 kg of the life sciences samples he collected during his stay on the station.
Merbold is sure that the samples did not suffer damages from the period in which the refrigerator was switched off.
