Construction of the station had been already started by April 28, 1906, with the first stone set by the King Victor Emmanuel III, but they didn't even have a real project yet.
The last, real, contest for its construction was won by architect Ulisse Stacchini in 1912 and that's when the actual works began.
Because of the Italian economic crisis during World War I, the construction proceeded very slowly, and the project, quite simple at the beginning, kept changing and became more and more complex and majestic.

Stacchini’s design was selected because it was the most successful in formally linking the various parts of the complex interchange of urban and railway traffic.
Building work was delayed, however, until 1926, and in the interim Stacchini was forced to make a number of significant alterations.
He preserved certain characteristics of the initial design, such as the refined linear quality of details and the monumentality of the whole, but when the station was inaugurated in 1931 it appeared outdated from both a technical and architectural standpoint, and Stacchini’s reputation was badly affected.

Cantoni's neo-classical design, however, was considered too traditional for the prosperous city and a second competition was held in 1912.
Ulisse Stacchini won the second round and the construction of the building began in 1920.

Architect Ulisse Stacchini was thwarted by the First World War, which completely brought construction to a halt, but enabled him to incorporate some of the ideas of Antonio Sant'Elia, the brilliant Futurist architect.
The company has apparently decided to keep the project under wraps as far as the public is concerned (their website states “be patient for a few weeks, we are working in order to give you a site full of information on the improvement project” and, at other web pages, “page temporarely (sic) not available”).
While Stacchini's model for the station was patriotism and Ancient Rome, the model underscoring the new plan is more prosaic.

Architect Cantonis project proved successful but it was to remain on paper.
In 1911 the City council set up yet another contest: Among the 43 featured projects, the winner was to be the In motu vita by Ulisse Stacchini.
Works started in 1912 but Milano Centrale troubles would not yet be over: with the start of WWI works slowed to the point of stopping definitely.
