The late May bank holiday weekend saw fourteen Tempests at Ullswater for their National Championships which was run in conjunction with the Mirror Northern Area Championships.
Jonathan Modral (GBR 1161) and his father, Ian, crewed by Robin Higgens in GBR 1114 (Ullswater YC) were judged by the race officer to have tied for first place.
Ullswater YC put on an excellent event, with good courses and well organised races, shoreline management, and catering.

In the 1780's the Howard family of Greystoke Castle had an old hunting lodge or Pele tower close to the Ullswater shore renovated into what is now Lyulph's Tower, set among its own sporting estate.

There are plenty of signs to Ullswater and then turn right towards Glenridding (not left to Pooley Bridge).
Right from the water's edge it's really shingly and full of stones which can hamper your attempts to get far...I went to a cheap shop in Penrith and bought some cheap velcro sandals with foam bases (£3.99) and was able to walk right in without any trouble.
Aira Force is a 180 foot drop waterfall across the road from Ullswater.
