As Charles XII died heirless, there was in 1718 a disputed succession between his sister (Ulrika Eleanora) and Brother-in-law (Frederick IV of Holstein-Gottorp).
They gave the crown to Ulrika Eleanora, but on condition that she accept a constitution which severely restricted royal power.
