Iron Man is a take charge, balls to the wall super hero who constantly risks his own health and safety to help those in need.
As Iron Man fights and gets pummeled by the bad guys, his sounds of pain is totally realistic and adds tremendously to the drama of those scenes.
As someone who read Iron Man almost from the beginning of the graphic novel way back in the 60's, it is thrilling to see old Shellhead in action, especially in the truly awesome CGI animation.

He also has to know that a Card comic is going to sell well, and that by letting him complete his contract and never sign him again, he can easily retcon the series out of existance and still have made money from the OSC fanbase.
We know a lot of people were underwhelmed by the first Ultimate Iron Man mini.
So Ultimate Iron Man vol 1 is on the good side of a good collection.

Ok Ultimate iron man turned tony stark into a metahuman and i get why a lot of people didnt like it.
I think that the problem is that by remaking Stark as "super human" instead of just a bored millionaire they took away the thing that regular readers could identify themselves with.
And I acknowledge the Ultimate Iron Man mini, it's just that my brain can't seem put it in Ultimate continuity.

Ultimate Iron Man tells us the origin of billionaire industrialist Tony Stark, which is probably as far as you could have come to expect it to be.
All in all, Ultimate Iron Man may be worth a look for Iron Man, Ultimate universe, or even Card fans, but don't expect anything spectacular in the least.
Although Iron Man's new Ultimate-universe origin story is a bit far-fetched, with Tony Stark now a scientifically engineered mutant-savant, raised by an on-the-lam father in a T2-ish survivalist mode, I still found the book itself to be pretty readable and fun.

Polite Dissent » Ultimate Iron Man #1: A Medical Review: comics, medicine, and medical comics
Goaded by Gordon’s post, I decided to take a stab at Ultimate Iron Man #1 earlier than I had originally planned.
I haven’t actually read Ultimate Iron Man #1 so all I know about it comes from you blog but let me see if I got this right: Maria Stark, Iron Man’s mom, decides to create a child that will have undifferentiated neural tissue throughout his body.
And to make a medical nit-pick: Fetus or no, Maria’s child will still have far more neural tissue than a human is supposed to have so technically, whilst her child may be intelligent (or not) it will also be quite deformed.

Ultimate Iron Man #1 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
Whilst some argue that Ultimate continuity is already getting somewhat bogged-down, Tony Stark is still a relatively blank slate for a new creative team to tackle, and the direction that this miniseries looks to be taking seems in no danger of interfering with Tony’s characterisation in Ultimates.
The central concept of a bacteria-based skin suit is a neat and unexpected way to begin the Iron Man story — even if Tony Stark hasn’t even been born yet in the timeframe in which this issue is set.
There are also amusing details to be found with the clunky VHS format of Stark’s otherwise ultra-modern presentation, or the old-fashioned spacesuit-esque labwear that the scientists use in one very dramatic scene.

From reading a sampling of Card’s column, he at least appears to be a thinking person who arrives at his conclusions logically, which can be a rarity among right-wing commentators.
