Ultimate Marvel is an imprint of comic books published by Marvel Comics, featuring reimagined and updated versions of the company's most popular superhero characters, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
While Ultimate Spider-Man was originally aimed at younger readers in their teenage years, other titles in the Ultimate imprint have being aimed at older readers; however, all titles in the Ultimate imprint were intended primarily to attract new readers rather than to convert the existing Marvel fanbase.
In particular, the backstory of the Ultimate Fantastic Four has been compressed so that they gain their powers when Reed Richards, the eldest, is only twenty-one years old, his role as father-figure of the group being transferred to the new character of Professor Storm, the actual father of Sue and Johnny Storm.

Ultimate Marvel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nevertheless, the Ultimate imprint as a whole was intended to attract and serve new readers beyond the existing Marvel fan base, although long-time fans have generally embraced the line.
The stories and characters of Ultimate Marvel have been adapted to reflect the differences between the present and past continuities, most of which were created in the 1960s and 1970s.
This crossover was to have occurred in Ultimate Fantastic Four #21 (July 2005), although it turned out that this was a bit of sly misdirection on Marvel's part, as the continuity that they crossed over into in the issue was not that of Earth 616, but a similiar one taken over by zombies.

Marvel Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New Universe was intended to be a more realistic, self-contained superhero universe, but due to a combination of a lack of editorial support and a general disinterest on the part of the readers, the line was cancelled after three years.
Marvel's major heroes (the ones who get involved in most of the important events) are the ones created from 1961 to 1963, during Marvel's "Silver Age": Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Thor, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director, Nick Fury.
Note that in Marvel Comics, the concept of a continuity is not the same as "dimension" or "universe"; for example, characters like Mephisto and Dormammu hail from alternate dimensions and the Celestials from another universe, but they all nevertheless belong to Earth-616.

The X Bridge | Opinions | Is Ultimate Marvel A Failure?
Marvel Comics has tried to create multiple universes, not unlike their Distinguished Competitors, beginning in the late 70s, when their fanbase grew a decade older and wanted to get different titles.
The 2099 universe was basically a futuristic version of the current Marvel Universe with heroes (and villians) that you are familiar with reintroduced and revamped with little to no connection with the original characters.
In the meantime, Marvel wanted to reintroduce their franchises to younger audiences as well as modernize classic franchises for those readers who only experiences with the characters were the theatrical versions of their heroes.

This was a nice way to lay the groundwork for a brand new Universe of continuity such as the Ultimate Marvel Universe.
This contains all sixteen issues of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up as well as Ultimate Spider-Man Super Special #1, which was an oversized issue that had a large team of artists.
The exceptions were the Shang-Chi story, where the artist was saddled with the virtually impossible task of translating the motions of a martial arts master to the comic book page, and the Super Special, which was being constantly interrupted by changing artists.

The Ultimate Marvel Universe began to grow at today’s Ultimate panel at WizardWorld with the announcement of Ultimate Fantastic Four by Brian Bendis, Mark Millar and Adam Kubert.
Marvel may be able to kill the demand for #1 issues by oversaturation like their catering of the periodicals to trade collections is going to kill the direct market.
And in the case of something as new as the Ultimate line that has only a couple of writers working on it, they should do their best to keep that continuity tight for as long as they are involved.
