Ultra (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ultra is Depeche Mode's ninth full-length album, which was released on April 15, 1997.
The album is the first album after the departure of Alan Wilder, who left to focus on his solo project Recoil.
The long time that separates this album from the previous was due to David Gahan's near suicide and recovery from addiction to drugs.

NAJM Dance Music Reviews - Ultra Nate - Stranger Than Fiction
Ultra Nate has stirred it up over the years with hits like "Found A Cure", "New Kind of Medicine", "Party Girl", "Free", and "If You Could Read My Mind" from the movie Studio 54.
In a time when the art of song craft has given way to DJ sets, Ultra presents us with well constructed and memorable songs rather than DJ remixes, which is a nice change of pace.
Ultra is an artist's artist and her personality really shines through on "Stranger Than Fiction".

The band's maiden voyage into the studio was a surprisingly fulfilling and enjoyable experience, a far cry from the horror stories that seem ever-present in recollections of recording an album.
Promises that their live show is an honest display of emotion, not a smoke filled spectacle, were kept as the band opened the night at Club Raven last month.
To their credit, the band was well aware of what they were up against, and as Cifarelli jokingly lead the crowd in chanting for Headcharge, they seemed to maintain respect and appreciation.

 Depeche Mode: Ultra
The album stands as a personal and artistic triumph from a band who lived through their darkest days during its creation.
Dave Gahan considers his vocal performances on 'Ultra' to be the best of his career: "They really take you to a place, wherever that place may be, and they take you on a journey, tell you a story and you listen, you know, it draws you in.
As he sings on the album's closing track 'Insight'; "I'm talking to you now/The fire still burns." Lesser bands may have crumbled by now, but Depeche Mode are firmly, defiantly back in business.

 * Dusted Reviews - Ultra Fuckers *
Ultra Fuckers come from Japan, home of the delightfully quirky (the broken-English slogan “We are psychedelic warrior” is emblazoned across the cover).
The album sounds like every piece of equipment used in the recording process, from instruments to microphones to tape to vinyl, was made of cardboard.
It takes either a tremendous effort or a complete disregard for the process to make a recording sound this bad, and since Ultra Fuckers took the trouble to get their album released, I’m inclined to believe the effect is intentional.

After the hugely successful Violator, we were given a soul-rock album, something nobody thought they were capable of, and Ultra, the follow-up to Songs of Faith and Devotion, is the perfect mixture of strings and keyboards.
The album is made of a wide variety of musical styles, from the synth-pop of "It's no good" to the US- western of "Freestate", from the rock of "Useless" to the soft ballad in "Insight".
An elegant album that is probably the most accessible in the entire discography of these Basildon musicians, though most of the credits go to an album released the same year, the "OK Computer" of Radiohead.

Ultra, however, brought a lot to this album- some soulful interludes, her soothing (yet younger sounding) vocals, and her introduction into reigning the house music genre (still after 14 years, she's got it!)
The good part of this album is that we can hear Ultra's voice before it has matured to what it is today, and we are given the pleasure of hearing some evolutionary songwriting from Ultra, something that most recording artists lack on debut albums.
Man, this album is astounding in all aspects: her sultry, smooth voice, the live and synthetic instruments perfectly blended together in harmony, lyrics which exude depth and solidity, and an overall superb combination of disco, R&B/soul, and house.

Freezepop’s latest album, Fancy Ultra Fresh, manages to capture most of the energy of their excellent live show.
While it annoys me that singer Liz Enthusiasm’s atonal party chants were for the most part abandoned in favor of more standard sung vocals, I just can’t imagine the songs as they played them having the same power outside of a live setting.
The tracks that follow show the album continuing to gain steam, a trend that continues all the way through to the manic closer “Boys on Film”.

MK Ultra's songs are magnetic: riffs came flying at them from all direction, and somehow they all stuck.
MK Ultra make modern pop music as buoyant, diverse, and catchy as it comes, tweaking the formulas with a child scientist's sense of the absurd while never forgetting that a tune requires melody, harmony, internal rhythm, and outward dynamics to reach the listener.
MK Ultra paint their landscapes in mostly gray shade variations, but even so, the music is rich in its pop-sense complexity.

Though they were immediately pegged as the runts of the Bay Area thrash metal scene for barely being old enough to drive, Death Angel quickly silenced most critics with their ambitious first album, The Ultra-Violence.
Technically on par with many of their older peers, the album still showed a lot of room for growth, however -- especially in the songwriting department.
And at over ten minutes, the yawn-inducing multi-part title track is the best example of the group's desperate desire to impress with quantity, instead of quality.

Happily, Ultra turned out a winner; hooking up with Tim Simenon, longtime U.K. dance maven and producer of arty fare such as Gavin Friday's Adam 'n' Eve, Depeche delivered a strong album as a rejuvenated band.
The most immediate change was Gahan's singing; for the first time ever, he took singing lessons beforehand, and his new control and projection simply shines, especially on the marvelous "It's No Good," a pulsing, tense, yet beautiful song with another deeply romantic Gore lyric.
Closing with "Insight," a quite lovely, building ballad, Ultra showed Depeche wasn't ready to quit by any means.
