Ultra leftism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though the two are very closely related, the "ultra left" is not identical with left communism, but refers rather to a specific branch descending from people such as Otto Rühle, Anton Pannekoek, Herman Gorter, and Paul Mattick.
The ultra-left is defined particularly by its breed of anti-authoritarian Marxism, which generally involves an opposition to the state and to state socialism, as well as to parliamentary democracy, and to wage labour.
In opposition to Bolshevism the ultra left generally places heavy emphasis upon the autonomy and spontaneous organisation of the proletariat.

Common Voice 3 - 'Ten Blokes...' by Watkins & Flynn
But we think we will be well enough understood by the readers of this journal if we say that by the ultra-left we mean all those groups and individuals who use such concepts as ‘the left-wing of capitalism’ to distinguish their practice from that of other socialist and marxist (leftist) parties.
Rühle is attacking leftism from the point of view of communism and revolution at a time when the idea of a working-class revolution didn’t seem mad.
Leftism, they argue, is bourgeois nonsense, whereas genuine communist theory and practice is separated from it by a clear – if thin – red line.

Thus our current working model of Leftism as differentiated from Rightism, is that of a progressive, liberal, or radical, depending upon the subject at hand (the progressive being leftist on Social Issues, the Liberal in Political Issues, and the Radical in Economics).
Since the subject matter is that of socialism, we shall deal with leftism in its further extrema, but still towards the centre of the leftist arena.
Leftism is the idea that everyone wants the same thing, and are willing to help each other get it.

The main ultra group that became hegemonious in the CGH was the Corriente en Lucha (Fighting Trend).
The IS say that it "cannot understand which the "bureaucratic postures" of the ultras had been, and in another place assure that their procedures did not diminish the merit of "those who wanted to lead, in their way, this struggle against the government and the regime".
But the ultras disregarded the concessions that authorities were forced to make, and - above all - they underrated the evident fact that an enormous part of the students and of the population were already getting tired of the strike and wanted a solution to it.

They seem to be asking (some of) the right questions, but I fear that compromise/involvement/leftism ("elections and propagandising and marches and demos") versus purity/passivity/ultra-leftism could well parody the latter and banalise the former.
The ultraleft (not a term I care for) critique of leftism (also unhelpful, if unlikely to be bettered without recourse to ugly neologisms) arose as a critique of the kind of activities the Left has always engaged in, not as a form of political withdrawal.
Whilst I would suggest the political thinking of the official ultraleft is moribund, I do not believe that leftism (and I'm increasingly aware that "leftism" requires a definition from me soon) is the answer.

Naxalism had arisen in the sixties in the background of petty-bourgeois frustrations at the deepening crisis of the bourgeois-landlord system and the left-sectarian line advocated by the CPC during the cultural revolution phase in China.

One can use the term leftism[11] to get a handle on this phenomena but it remains true that leftism does not explain things, leftism needs to be explained.
[11] Leftism, as a descriptive and derogatory term for ideological positions and practices that present themselves as oppositional but are actually within bourgeois politics, is a useful shorthand.
However, its use as an explanation for the failure of movements tends to the dogmatic assumption that somebody/we already possess the correct 'non-leftist politics' and the problem is simply getting them across.

The EFLNA debacle is important therefore because it provides one more component of our practical experience with ultra-"leftism" from which eventually we will draw the theoretical conclusions necessary to defeat it (for the moment) and move on with our' critical long term struggle with right opportunism.

If the main danger does in fact come from the "Left," then we can expect that it has sought to hide the true features of "Leftism." We have to examine critically the accepted definitions of "left" opportunism with the knowledge that it is the "Left" trend which has won them broad acceptance.
To achieve a comprehensive conception of "leftism," we need to view it historically, both nationally and internationally.
Most revolutionaries today tend to follow this advice in regard to revisionism, but do not apply it to the study of "Leftism." We will therefore consider a "left" trend from a much earlier period of U.S. history, namely, the IWW.
