Ultramarathon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ultramarathon is any running event longer than the marathon length of 42.195 kilometres (26.2 miles, 45,760 yards).
There are generally two types of ultramarathon events: runs for a specified distance and runs for a specified time (with the winner covering the most distance in that time).
The most common distances run are 50 and 100 miles or 50 and 100 kilometres, though several other distances, e.g., double marathons, 100 mile, or multiday races of 1000 miles or even longer are also contested.

Badwater Ultramarathon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is a 135 mile (215 km) course starting at 282 feet (85 m) below sea level in the Badwater Basin, in California's Death Valley, and ending at an elevation of 8360 feet (2548 m) at Whitney Portal, the trailhead to Mount Whitney.
In compliance with National Park and Forest Service permitting rules, this is not a competitive race but a "solo" crossing (as in, "not a part of the official race", which is not to be confused with Ulrich's use of "solo" to designate an unassisted crossing).
Any competitor who completes both the Badwater Ultramarathon and the Furnace Creek 508 bicycle race (also held in Death Valley) during the same calendar year is awarded the Death Valley Cup.

Ultramarathon Man - Dean Karnazes - Penguin Group (USA)
National Park-considered the world's toughest footrace-in 130-degree weather; and he is the only person to complete a marathon to the South Pole in running shoes (and probably the only person to eat an entire pizza and a whole cheesecake while running).
Karnazes is an ultramarathoner: a member of a small, elite, hard-core group of extreme athletes who race 50 miles, 100 miles, and longer.
Ultramarathon Man is Dean Karnazes's story: the mind-boggling adventures of his nonstop treks through the hell of Death Valley, the incomprehensible frigidity of the South Pole, and the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and canyons of the Sierra Nevada.

NPR : Braving the Badwater Ultramarathon
Ultramarathon runner Angela Brunson runs through the 123-degree heat of Death Valley.
But some consider the Badwater Ultramarathon the true test of the committed runner -- 135 miles through the deadly summer heat of Death Valley, beginning at the lowest point in North America and ending halfway up the tallest peak in the lower 48 states.
Brunson, already an experienced marathon and ultramarathon runner, was one of 79 competitors in this year's event.

I am torn between whether this merits 4 stars which seems to be the overall average mark given in reading the hardcover reviews or 3 stars; cause really, it is fascinating to read up to a point; but as for running tips, it is somewhat lacking.
Honestly, the book starts out some like one of the ultramarathons in which he participates; the first hundred and fifty pages I'd say, are those kinds that one can not stop reading, then he hits his badwater endeavour in Death Valley; and the book trudges along.

Hal Higdon: On The Run - Ultramarathon Training
The secret in running ultramarathons is to restructure your training, not merely add more miles.
Although the Comrades organizers do not seem to enforce that standard as strictly as does the Boston Athletic Association for its race, they feel that you need the ability to run that fast to have a chance to better 11:00 in their race (the cutoff time for earning a bronze medal).
For years in which the race is run on a different day of the week, you will need to make some small modifications to the taper period.

 Ultramarathon Man in ZhurnalWiki
Dean Karnazes has written a neat little autobiography, Ultramarathon Man, subtitled "Confessions of an All-night Runner".
He's adroit in describing the ugly-funny side of ultrarunning, and is particularly deft in handling scenes involving unæsthetic human bodily functions --- the kind of things that become matter-of-fact "Yeah, that happened" incidents during an ultra, but which aren't ordinarily mentioned in polite society.
Unfortunately, although Ultramarathon Man is a fast read Karnazes's prose is (sorry to have to use this word here) often pedestrian.
