Russians Vote for New President- ADL Backgrounder
The use of ultranationalism in election propaganda was part and parcel of the campaigns of two leading politicians that have long been known for their anti-Semitic, xenophobic and anti-Western views, Gennady Zyuganov and Vladimir Zhirinovsky.
In this campaign, Zhirinovsky who seemed to be an extremist character in previous election campaigns (1991 and 1996) appears to be much more moderate in his orientation and is not seen this year as representing the extreme opposition.
On several occasions, Zyuganov also spoke against the proposed legislation which "blockade national self-consciousness of the Russian and other peoples that is being done under the false slogans of fighting Russian fascism." Zyuganov referred to proposed hate crime legislation, which was blocked by the left majority in the previous Duma, lower house of Parliament.

For many, the acceptance of ultranationalism and militarism during the 1930s was more a matter of outward conformity than inner conviction.
There was, moreover, a certain resonance between pacifists' idealization of Japan as a beacon of peace and disarmament, and militarists' depiction of it as the paladin of national liberation and "co-prosperity." Even in the humiliation of defeat, Japan remained the "light of Asia," set apart by its unique national virtues.

Nativism may thus turn into ultranationalism, which believes that other nations or nation-states are either inferior or threatening and must be dealt with harshly.
The most extreme example of anti-foreignism in connection with nativism in modern China may be seen in the strong xenophobia of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 and again during the Cultural Revolution of the late 1960s.
