Malibu Comics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ultraverse was a shared universe much like the real world, but in which a variety of characters - known within the comics as "Ultras" - acquired super-human abilities.
The Ultraverse line was launched during the "boom" of the early 1990's, roughly concurrent with the debut of publishers such as Image and Valiant, and new superhero lines from DC and Dark Horse (Milestone and Comics Greatest World, respectively).
Emphasizing the tight continuity between the various series in the Ultraverse line, Malibu made extensive use of crossovers, in which a story that began in one series would be continued in the next-shipping issue of another series.

Fortunately for Malibu, Ultraverse fans (those that were buying the comics to read instead of just for an investment) kept their interest up as the comics were still looked upon as fun reading.
The entire Ultraverse line was placed on the chopping block and all of the Malibu staff was fired, sans the coloring department.
In January of 1997, Ultraverse: Future Shock was released, a one-shot meant as a wrap-up to the Ultraverse but proving to be the last nail in its coffin.

One of the Ultraverse's most innovative characters, MANTRA, was "reinvented", turning the eternal male warrior reborn in the body of a woman into a whining "Valley Girl", and the Ultraverse's premier team, ULTRAFORCE, became little more than a minor arm of THE AVENGERS (with one of their lesser members serving as leader!).
She was the Ultraverse's Number One villainess, and a one-time member of that world's greatest assembly of heroes.
This was to draw her into the fold of ULTRAFORCE, the greatest assembly of heroes the Ultraverse had ever seen, and her secret plotting continued from within their ranks, whilst aiding the team with her (stolen) knowledge and technology.

Today's edition of Rich Johnston's "Lying in the Gutters" includes a column on the status of the Ultraverse characters, whose legal status has been in question since Malibu Comics, publisher of the Ultraverse line of titles, was bought by Marvel Comics back in 1995.
Marvel's concerns over the ownership of the Ultraverse characters seem to be of a recent nature, however.
A response by Moreels made in a Usenet discussion about the X-Men 2004 handbook in June 2004 indicates that the editors in charge of the project were not aware of any potential problems at the time.

Ultraverse "founding fathers" and creators have stated that this is not the case.
Joe Quesada in a Newsarama interview stated that payments to Ultraverse creators was a "logistical nightmare" and that he didn't want to air dirty laundry-- a statement that baffled Ultraverse creators.
Talking to Ultraverse publisher Scott Rosenberg, he was also baffled as to the claims of "logistical nightmares" and "creator owned characters." He made it clear to me that the initial contracts were "industry standard" and both plain and simple.

While this is a logistical nightmare because of the way the initial deal was structured, it's not the reason why we have chosen not to go near these characters, there is a bigger one, but I really don't feel like it's my place to make that dirty laundry public.
While the Ultraverse line premiered when there was an overflow of superhero comics, some of the titles were worth a second look.
