Squarepusher - Ultravisitor : album review
That Ultravisitor is a continuation of Tom 'Squarepusher' Jenkinson's dedication to the art of the drum and bass, both in its 'live' and sequenced varieties, should come as no surprise.
Ultravisitor isn't the kind of record to let you just ride on the visceral thrust of its ups, or let you drift on autopilot on its downs.
Though nominally composed of 15 tracks, Ultravisitor can be roughly translated as a triptych, where the second and third movements will provide as uncompromising a discussion of musical ideas as you're likely to hear on one extended set.

 SQUAREPUSHER - Ultravisitor
The one difference that 'Ultravisitor' demonstrates in comparison to previous works is his love for the bass guitar, and a notable live feel that, despite its vigour, allows his sequenced brutalism more space to breathe than usual.
Although he has already toyed with these elements before, it's more prolonged on 'Ultravisitor', hence, tracks such as 'Andrei' would be equally at home in a blues or jazz club.
Ultravisitor is exactly what it says on the tin, a hyped-up return to the past.

But as a synthesist, that is, someone who can turn his love of jazz, electronica and avant-gardes of all stripes into a coherent musical narrative -- he prefers playing hide and seek to letting us pin a tale on him.
His seventh album, "Ultravisitor," is more of the same: moments of quietude interrupted by outbursts of attention-getting virtuosity.
"Ultravisitor" is one of Jenkinson's most extreme albums; the collision of gabba-tempo breakbeats, Jaco Pastorius-style bass runs and oceanic keyboard washes is as rudely constructed as ever.

 The Yale Herald - March 26, 2004 - squarepusher - ultravisitor
Although Ultravisitor manages an impressive number of the former, it ultimately suffers from the same frustrating duality.
On Ultravisitor, Jenkinson's jazz and electronic influences also sit more comfortably together than ever before; "Telluric Piece" and the driving "Tetra-Sync" are excellent fusions of the two styles.
Ultravisitor, the best record of his career, is as close as we can get for now.

 Splendid Magazine reviews Squarepusher: Ultravisitor
Ultravisitor goes out on a bit of a limb, and the result is both earthily organic and beautifully alien.
Though it might be a difficult listen in spots (especially for the rave-ier set), the disc definitely shows Jenkinson stretching his musical limbs, and it's a fascinating sight.
When an artist (especially an electronic musician) puts such an unembellished image of himself on the cover, it's a pretty broad metaphor for his readiness to come out from behind the machines and be seen as human.

 SQUAREPUSHER Ultravisitor
Perhaps his most accessible record to date, Ultravisitor focuses, for the first time since Music Is Rotted One Note, on the musician far more than on the programmer.
Although he retains some of what has made him a household name on the electronic circuit over the last ten years, his more subtle approach serves his musical talent in complete new ways, often highlighting his passion for jazz in similar fashion to Music Is Rotted One Note.

If your songs don't fit into some greater framework, they'd better be good enough to stand alone.

Ultravisitor is the push by Squarepusher away from these pedantic excercises, further pushing into the jazz-influences that invigorated Music is One Rotten Note.
Returning to performance as opposed to programming on Ultravisitor, allows Jenkinson to include audience response in both “Circlewave” and “Tetra-Sync” and thereby reconciles the vacuity of the bedroom producer.

Ultravisitor was trailed over the summer in UK and US shows, and earned praise from mainstream and indy media alike.
So Ultravisitor is an album carrying heavy expectation on its back, both amongst the small army of Squarepusher fans and interested bystanders.
Like other great innovator composers, like Stockhausen or even Shoenberg, Jenkinson’s rightful peers, not everything that is commendable is necessarily fun to listen to.

But the fans are waiting and the show must go on, so the Tap copes by staging a performance not of their string of now-nostalgic rock hits from the '70's, but rather an obscure and best-forgotten full album's worth of instrumental jazz-prog-rock centered around long bass solos.
This is what we were thinking half-way through "Ultravisitor." Or to put it another way, after a dozen listens, we pushed the skip button on these tracks time after time, though, eventually, curiosity got the better of us and we went back to listen to them again.
Part of what sets "Ultravisitor" apart is its pseudo-live-recording, with audience whoops and cheers imported into the mix when the music quiets or has just rounded a difficult corner.

In earlier albums like Busy, Curious, Thirsty, this tended to be expressed as a tension between the two approaches within the music itself.
Increasingly, though, different tracks on his albums have veered between the two facets, and so it is with Ultravisitor.
I find Squarepusher's approach to the dichotomy far less appealing than that of Spring Heel Jack, another electronica/drum and bass creator with an interest in jazz.
