Approximately 3.6 kg of Ulva lactuca (see voucher specimen, Roger Williams University, Bristol, RI) was collected at Brenton Point, Newport, Newport County, RI, to the east side of the jetty with stairs on it on 30 March 1997.
Growth of Ulva lactuca from 30 March 1997 to 18 April 1997 yielded an average increase of dissolved oxygen in the water of 1.89 mg/L per 96 hour period with a rapid decrease in oxygen content within the period of the last eight days.
Although Ulva did not provide a good means it is possible that other green algae may. Because of this it may be worthwhile to conduct these types of studies with others of this Division.
