Ulva Island, off Stewart Island, is managed as an open sanctuary by the Department of Conservation.
Ulva Island was named after the island of the same name in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland by the Shetland Islanders who were settled on Stewart Island in 1872 by the New Zealand government of the day.
Ulva Island was visited by early Maori to strip bark from Totara trees to aid the storage of muttonbirds - the sooty shearwater.

Immediately to the west of Ulva is the island of Gometra, separated from it by a narrow inlet that can be crossed at high tide by a bridge and at low tide by the tidal beach.

With 4.5km of new gravel tracks, discreet green and yellow signs and strategically placed picnic areas, the island was one of New Zealand's few "open sanctuaries."
