Ulva Island is a small island lying within Paterson Inlet, which is part of Stewart Island/Rakiura in New Zealand.
It was named after Ulva Island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland.
In 1996, the island was declared rat-free, following an eradication program, and extirpated birds have been reintroduced to the island.

On Ulva, the inquisitive tuis amounted almost to a nuisance, they all wanted to approach the visitors and announce their interest and defend their territory with a peculilar loud wingbeat combined with melodious, but noisy, whistling.
The largest land bird on Stewart Island and its smaller neighbors, a green and rusty-red parrot, the Kaka, was nesting and feeding young wherever we walked.
In a half-hour, we had seen two of New Zealand's three native parakeets (the third was not to be expected in any case), been shown kiwi tracks in a muddy spot on the trail, and been visited by a flock of birds so uncommon that lifelong residents of South Island had never seen one.

 BirdForum - Kakapo on Ulva Island New Zealand
Ulva very kindly sent me a snap which I have now posted and this is what she had to say about one of only 86 Kakapo.
They have to be really carefull on Ulva because it is not 100% rodent free (it is open access to anyone with a boat) and also Weka can be a predator (I don't think there are any on the Kakapo breeding Islands).
They'll be returning the boy to one of the breeding islands this summer, hopefully he'll lure in a lady Kakapo to his 'track and bowl' this time (apparently he was more interested in getting it on with Humans last time round!).

It's a DOC operated island and they have made it into a bird sanctuary.
Anyway - DOC made Ulva Island (and a few others) into sanctuaries for wildlife - there are no predators on the island, even rats which swim across are caught and killed.
After Ulva we kayaked on down (through the clearest water ever - the seas are just crystal) to Abrahams Bay, to climb all the up 352m elevation at the top of Pryse Peak.
