  Ulver
Interspersed with a description of the maiden's relation to the subterraneans, her fears, her sadness and longing back to the safety of her home; and the subterraneans's hunger and passion for the girl, are also depictions of Norwegian nature and landscapes.
Ulver is a synthesis of all the atmospheres provided to us by the dark, sinister sides of Norwegian folklore.
We have decided to release this album under the Ulver moniker, because the concept and visual aspect of the music on this album is entirely the same as we do when performing in metal manners.

The latest Ulver album is certainly not going to win back any of their old-school fans, but is nonetheless a homecoming of sorts.
And while Ulver truly bear a resemblance to no one, it's nice to be able to call up at least one familiar name when attempting to describe these Norwegian's latest sonic chaos.
Ulver have always played the game according to their own rules, much to the chagrin of those who fell in love with this group early on.

In the 1990s, Ulver manifested their name with the the release of a trilogy composed of fl metal or music incontestably related to fl metal, before a journey into an electronic approach was begun with Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.
From the on, Ulver's music was increasingly stripped down to the basics of an electronic universe with the vocals and other instrumentation being only second to the former.
Ulver's first attempt at creating a visual approach to their music was epitomized with the album Perdition City / Music to an Interior Film, which was issued in conjunction with a series of stills.

Ulver was formed in Norway in 1993 by vocalist Kristoffer Rygg alias Garm.
Except for Ulver, Garm has also been a part of Arcturus for quite a long time, another Norwegian band from which the albums require a dedicated devotion before you discover their revelatory charms.
In 1999 Ulver focused on a poem of William Blake on the album ‘The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell’.

Ulver have been blurring the lines and boundaries on just what can and cannot be done in music pretty much since their debut in 1994.
Metal of any kind it certainly was not: this was trip-hop, this was jazzy, this was electronic ambience, this was nothing we had heard before and it was brilliant.
In their press release, Ulver relates the sound to, “something like a hospital for the dying.

Ulver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ulver's first three albums are often classified as their "Black Metal Trilogie," although they are in fact quite diverse in musical styles, and in fact weren't all fl metal, ironically.
Kveldssanger, Ulver's second album, contrasts with Bergtatt as it uses acoustic guitar and cello with chamber chants performed by Garm, and completely eschews the traditional fl metal elements of Bergtatt, while still having a folk theme.
Ulver's next two releases, the EP Metamorphosis and full-length album Perdition City, were even more experimental than the “Blake Album”.

Yes, we can say for sure that the group wanted to record the conceptual album with a new idea, and it is quite natural – Ulver always experimented and gradually they were making a progress in their creation, especially taking into account that their first CD had been made merely in a fl metal mood.
Of course we can't call the music clearly national, that is because Ulver didn't reconstructed the folk, but in amazing way managed to transfer what they wanted through their compositions – the spirit their country, the shape of their thoughts.
We may excuse Ulver a lot, due to such things that are retained and do not flow together like something amorphous.

Metal Coven Webzine - Metal Reviews - Ulver - Bergtatt
While Bergtatt is almost undeniably a Black Metal album, and has its share of intense blasts, harsh mid-range screams, and droning guitars, Ulver skillfully incorporate disparate elements from folk and classical music into their songs, creating a Black Metal album that stands apart from the rest of its kin.
Particularly arresting is the use of an acoustic guitar under a blast figure in the final track and a wordless choral vocal in the second (of singular interest also as it lends a human touch to a space usually occupied by synthesizers).
Ulver's use of choir-like vocals and acoustic instruments tempers the overall sound in parts, but the textures they create result in a uniquely intriguing album.

It's dangerous to leave Ulver to their own devices for this long, because the time "away" (in this case, spent working on soundtracks and being nominated for the Norwegian Grammys) gives them ample time to decide how best to convolute their music, and thereby, our perceptions of it.
In the face of scorn for "going soft" or "selling out", Ulver has embraced that for which they were spurned and gone past the point of caring for public opinion.
Ulver has - in the past eight or so years - gone beyond every form of music they've tried their hand at, and dominated most of them in the process, unbeknownst to the masses.

Ulver : Kveldssanger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The first of several surprising stylistic turns for Ulver, who was originally pegged as a fl metal band, Kveldssanger is an album of acoustic, classically tinged Norse folk songs, all written and arranged by vocalist Garm.
This style was hinted at during some of the acoustic interludes on their previous album, Bergtatt, but here it has been more fully developed into actual songs with thoughtful, though sparse, arrangements.
Listening to Kveldssanger, it is hard to picture this album being made by a group still in their teens, let alone by one whose next album would yield the savage fl metal of Nattens Madrigal/Madrigal of the Night.

Ulver's music on their first album, Bergtatt, is considered folk-inspired fl metal for its fast tempo, dry electric guitar sound and unnatural screaming vocals, mixed with acoustic passages and a fantasy storyline.
Kveldssanger, Ulver's second album, strongly contrasts with Bergtatt in that it has eliminated the electric guitar and screaming vocals and replaced them with folk and classical-inspired acoustics and chamber chants performed by Garm.

Once upon a time, Ulver was a simple fl metal band, though even their tenure there can only be described as unconventional.
In one of the most startling left turns in the history of extreme metal (eclipsing that of Pyogenesis), Ulver released in 1999 the album Themes From William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, the title alone being a loud signal that this had little if anything in common with the previous releases.
Ulver now delves into all sorts of trip-hop, electronica, and ambient experimentalism, much of which is interesting in itself, but simply no longer relevant to a metal forum.

Yet they are still far from noisy or explosive in a heavy metal sense, with only Ulver's reliably hellish (or at the very least cryptic) lyrics holding any last vestiges of the band's fl metal origins.
And, as one has come to expect from Ulver, the total end result is unfailing eclectic, remarkably inspiring, and never less than a brave step into the depths of the unknown.

Ulver is a gifted tactician when it comes to conjuring up an electric storm of hollow, hallucinogenic sounds from programmable mobile equipment.
Ulver functions as the voiceless soundtrack to the Swedish short film, "Lyckantropen," which has a visually disturbing feel of impending doom as revealed by the dark and dramatic still imagery contained within.
The effects are enjoyable in their subliminal simplicity where windswept notes rise, fall, and refrain often lost in the fluidity of this interconnecting dark theme.

Thus, the path designed by the band on this release still owes greatly to their recent electronic leanings, although they now explore a facet of their sound which, in my opinion, was shamefully relegated to obscurity, with only slight appearances here and there, namely in their masterpiece Perdition City.
The orchestral work, the largest part of the album, is what we could describe as "ordinary" soundtrack material, although Ulver deliver it in their unique way, mixing it with classy-to-frantic drum work, electronic loops and percussion, while maintaining a general sense of coherence and finesse.
Furthermore, that beauty appears in various shapes, be it in the orchestrated delirium accompanied with intense drumming of "Rock Massif", parts I and II, or the jazzy "Surface".
