2005 indicate that Ulvophyceae as circumscribed here may be paraphyletic.
There is a lack of clear synapomorphies, i.e., defining characters, that set this group off from other green algae.
The characters below are either shared with some other green algae, or not present in all Ulvophyceae (see also Lewis and McCourt 2004).

Ulvophyceae contains marine organisms that take a variety of shapes that may consist of a few cells, long filaments, thin sheets of cells, or coenocytic cells.
Some organisms of Ulvophyceae produce toxins that discourage predation.
The chloroplasts of some others become symbionts after they are retained in the bodies of sea slugs that eat the algae.
