Set in 1904, the Dublin of Ulysses is a city in which the heated discussions of political independence, violence in response to British military occupation and the veneration of fallen heroes, run parallel to the academic "parlor-talk" of the Irish literary renaissance, the rebirth of the Irish language and the rejection of Anglophilic culture.
When James Joyce began writing his novel Ulysses, he had in mind a creative project that brought together aspects of his two major works Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, while at the same time incorporating aspects of Homer's epic The Odyssey.

Watching Ulysses now i'm suprised to find how grown up some of the plots and the overall style of the cartoon is. They dont make em like that anymore hehe.
The Odyssey itself looks very similar to the ship in "2001 : A Space Odyssey", it looks a little vulnerable though with a huge iris at its centre.

USS Turbot (SS-427), a Tench-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the turbot, a large, brown and white flatfish, valued as a food.
Her partially completed hulk was later launched and, in 1950, was assigned to the Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Annapolis, Maryland, where it was used for research and development in connection with the control and reduction of machinery noise in submarines.
Her keel was laid down on 13 November 1943 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the Cramp Shipbuilding Company, but the contract for her construction was cancelled on 12 August 1945.

Calypso was, according to Greek myth, the nymph who held Ulysses captive on the island of Gozo for ten years.
During the summer of 1953, Calypso was used to test new underwater cameras and electronic flashes invented by Dr. Harold Edgerton that made it possible to photograph deep water animals, pushing the limits of underwater exploration.

Ulysses 31 Anime Review by Ric (Webmaster)
Design-wise Ulysses 31 is awesome, the ships and costumes have an excellent futuristic feel as well as a sense of practicality and, despite some obvious liberties being taken, Greek mythology is also handled well.
The story is simple: Spaceship Captain Ulysses defies the Gods and kills the giant robot Cyclops to rescue his son.
Combining a classic story with the gung-ho space adventures popular at the time (aspects of Japanese series like Space Battleship Yamato and American series like Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica are very apparent), Ulysses 31 proved popular with children and adults alike.

In January 1973, the ship was sold to Cia de Vapores Cerulea SA of Ithaka, which was the trading name of the Ulysses Line Ltd. Renamed Calypso, the ship was then sent to Piraeus that same March.
In a way, it is ironic that the Southern Cross, a ship that with her innovative engine arrangement in a sense is a forerunner of most modern ships, is still around for her piece of the pie.
The blocks that had held the ship in position had been knocked away in preparation for the launch, and it would not be safe to delay it for more than half an hour.

Grant's relationship with Jesse Grant is a fascinating psychological contradiction, and there is little doubt the elder Grant drove his son to fits of despair.

Grant desperately wanted his father's approval, but the cantankerous old man was so different from his son that intimacy was impossible.

Her only long novel, Ship of Fools, substantially different in texture from the shorter fiction, nevertheless deserves a respected place in the aggregate of her reputation when the novel is rightfully considered for what it is and what it is not.
Ship of Fools comprises a voyage of the North German Lloyd S.A. Vera from Veracruz, Mexico, to Bremerhaven, Germany, from August 22 to September 17, 1931.
Calling Porter’s novel a “masterpiece” that would take its place among the best books of the century, he compared it with George Eliot’s Middlemarch and James Joyce’s Ulysses.
