Ulysses (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ulysses is a film shot in 1967 and based on James Joyce's novel Ulysses.
Starring Barbara Jefford and Milo O'Shea, it was adapted by Fred Haines and Joseph Strick, and directed by Strick.
There have been other movies based on Ulysses but this one stands out for its fidelity to the book and the fact that almost the entire screenplay is taken from lines in the book.

 Joyce - Film: Ulysses
His Ulysses is merely a bland and relatively unengaging movie, illuminated occasionally by a few tantalizing flashes of "what could have been." To put it simply, he lacked the creative chutzpah to meet Joyce's great work and then to make it his own.
Ulysses is an amazingly singular, bold, and compelling work, and any attempt to translate it into film should be as equally singular, bold, and compelling.
The majority of the movie was filmed in a very lackluster, superficial style that resists any attempts to meet it on a meaningful level.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Ulysses' Gaze | Deseret Morning News Web edition
While it's beautiful, even graceful, and though its heart is in the right place, there's just as much to condemn as there is in its favor.
For whichever reason, "Ulysses' Gaze" is more like an overstuffed and ultimately unsatisfying pastry than it is a fulfilling film epic.
"Ulysses' Gaze" is not rated but would probably receive an R for nudity, including brief full frontal shots of Keitel, violence, all of it heard but not seen, and two off-screen sexual encounters.

Ulysses DVD Review at The Z Review UK DVD reviews
Released in 1967 is was widely banned, especially in Ireland itself, and while aspects of the film now seem tame it’s easy to see why it could have raised a few eyebrows but it’s only when the second half kicks in that things start to take a turn for the weird.
When Ulysses really takes off it can be both dangerous and interesting but at times it verges on a sort of Carry On Dublin romp.
What you’d compare it to in modern cinema would be David Lynch when characters suddenly find themselves in other locations and even as other people giving Bloom the opportunity to wallow it his own subconscious as a sexual predator and leader of men while he suspects his wife of having an affair.

The movie’s appearance on the world scene is extremely timely as June 16 marks the centennial of Bloomsday, the day we follow Joyce’s main character, Leopold Bloom, through the streets of Dublin.
The movie was brought to the Westport by Friends of the Westport Library and Wild Geese a non-profit organization co-founded by Carl Shanahan of Stamford, which promotes a deeper appreciation of Irish culture.
The result is a movie that is a deeply humane slice of life that is contemporary and relevant to this day.

Ulysses (1967)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Joyce pioneered the plotless novel, concentrating on character development and situation, together with the melding of his characters' inner thoughts running in a hodge-podge of images and overlapping, run-on sentences.
For those unfamiliar with the work, "Ulysses" is the story of an author in search of a character about whom he can write a novel: two men, one middle-aged, one young, wandering aimlessly through Dublin for 18 hours, finally meeting in a brothel, and then discussing their day over a cup of cocoa.
Literary critic John Greenway observed, "To read it ['Ulysses'] with ease, one should have a PhD in comparative languages and literature." Indeed, Joyce himself spoke some 15 languages fluently and his work abounds with multiple lingual puns.
