Umar was part of the first emigration (Hijra) to Yathrib (renamed Medinat al Nabi, or simply Medina shortly thereafter) in 622 C.E. He was present at Badr, Uhud, Khaybar, and the raid on Syria, as well as many other engagements.

Umar's killer (Abu-Lu'lu'ah) was a Persian slave who is said to held a personal grudge against Umar; he stabbed the Caliph six times as Umar led prayers in the Masjid al Nabawi mosque in Medina and then committed suicide.

 Shi'a Real Ahl al-Sunnah 33_1
If Umar ibn al-Khattab tried very hard to obliterate the Prophet's ahadith, ridiculing them and acting to their contrary them even during the lifetime of the Prophet himself, it is no wonder that Quraysh handed the reins of its leadership to him, making him its supreme leader.
This proves to us that Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf is the one who made Ali hopeful with regard to becoming caliph so that he might not boycott this fake shura and be the cause of the nation falling again in dissension as happened at the saqeefa following the inauguration of Abu Bakr as the caliph.
[161] Umar ibn al-Khattab had invented that idea in order to pave the way for opposition to and competition with Ali simply because the sahaba knew fully well that caliphate rightfully belonged to Ali and was usurped by Quraysh.

astaghfirallah, what a disgrace and slander to the name of 'umar, radhi allahu 'anhu.
but regarding this foundation, when i think of the harshness of 'umar, radhi allahu 'anhu, towards the kuffar, and his division between good and evil, so much so that he was called al-farooq...it makes me sick to see his name associated with such an organization.
the name of 'umar, radhi allahu 'anhu, was a minor concern; it is democracy which bothers me.
