Umbar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Umbar's fleet was largely destroyed 29 years later, when Thorongil (Aragorn Elessar, as it later turned out) in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II led a taskforce south and burned them, killing the Captain of the Haven in the process.
With the Fall of Barad-dûr, Umbar, weakened and defeated, finally lost its sovereignty and submitted to the crown of King Elessar.
Umbar appeared on the bottom edge of the maps found in earlier editions of Lord of the Rings, but it is absent from modern editions, which regrettably map a slightly smaller area of Middle-earth.

Umbar was destroyed once again in 2980, when the great warrior Thorongil (Aragorn Elessar, as it later turned out) in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II led a taskforce south and killed the Captain of the Haven.

Bellakar became an important trade partner for Umbar, with exchanges to regions as far away as the Seven Lands or Eriador.
In the meantime, the quarrelling factions and conspirators among the Council of Captains in Umbar and the violent devastation and pillaging of the Gondorian coast (like the raids against Tolfalas, Lebennin or northern Harondor), slowly increased the distrust of Umbar among the Bellakaranî, while the privileged trade with Eriador continued.
On the other hand, relations between Bellakar and Umbar continued to worsen, and some Corsairs began to interest themselves in Mardruak coasts (much as the Sorija had in the past).

Tolkien does not mention the Corsairs again until the Stewardship of Cirion (2489-2567), although he tells us that Umbar was seized by Men of Harad sometime during the years when the Wainriders attacked Gondor (possibly between 1940 and 1944, when Wainriders passed south of Mordor and formed an alliance with the Haradrim).
The Corsairs continued to attack Gondor (and later Rohan) from that time forward, until the War of the Ring, when their fleets were taken by Aragorn and the army of the ghosts of the Men of Dunharrow.
The relationship between Gondor and the Corsairs of Umbar -- at least at the end of the Third Age -- is thus very much like that between northern Mediterranean ports and the Barbary Corsairs for many years.
