Umbellularia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Umbellularia californica is a tree native to coastal forests of western North America.
The leaves are smooth-edged and oval, 3–10 cm long and 1.5–3 cm broad, similar to the related Bay Laurel though usually narrower, and without the crinkled margin of that species.
The fruit is a round and green berry 2–2.5 cm long and 2 cm broad, lightly spotted with yellow, maturing purple.

FDA/CFSAN: Memorandum of Video-Conference for BNF No. 000025
Calgene concluded, based on a number of criteria and analyses summarized in their document, that the introduced 12:0 TE protein was not a safety concern.
The 12:0 TE from Umbellularia is similar to long chain TE's found in canola, soybean and other edible species.
The introduced TE enzyme is not detectable by Western blot analysis in mature seed, meal, or oil, and is subject to protease degradation.

 SOD Symposium-Paper Abstract
Resistance of Umbellularia californica (bay laurel) to Phytophthora ramorum
Recent research suggests California bay laurel trees, Umbellularia californica, act as a critical vector of Phytophthora ramorum, the causal agent of Sudden Oak Death.
Severe stem cankers on Quercus agrifolia (coast live oak) are strongly associated with heavily infested adjacent bay trees.

 Info on Sudden Oak Death
Some species, such as bay laurel (Umbellularia californica) and coffeeberry (Rhamnus californica), only show leaf spotting and leaf tip die back.
Foliar hosts, such as bay laurel (Umbellularia californica), are thought to be an important component as a disease reservoir and in spreading SOD as the "fungus" can fruit (sporulate) within one to three days on infected foliage.
SOD spread from oak to oak is fairly unlikely as the cankers on oaks rarely produce spores.

Bronzing of broadleaf evergreens - UBC Botanical Garden Forums
In my garden this happens to Umbellularia californica, and several species of Asiatic evergreen oak (Q. glauca, acuta, and myrsiniolia).
I am intrigued that your Umbellularia californica displays this characteristic, as the specimen that I am familiar with at VanDusen has not produced this effect in the years I’ve watched it — so it is reasonable to assume that it is not necessarily consistent for all specimens.
Possibly one of the finest examples of this effect can be seen in Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans’, which turns the most amazing shade of bronze-purple in the winter.

 California mixed evergreen forest.
The Mixed Evergreen Forest plant community is found mostly in the northern coastal mountains of California, though extending down to the central coastal mountains.
Some of the component species include Tanbark Oak (Lithocarpus densiflora), Madrone (Arbutus menziesii), Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), California Bay (Umbellularia californica), Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum), Canyon Live Oak (Quercus chrysolepis), Black Oak (Quercus kelloggii), Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) and California Hazelnut (Corylus californica).
However, you can grow these species, where temperatures often drop into the teens, by planting them under cover of oaks or on the lower side of structures.
