Umberto Giordano (August 28, 1867 - November 12, 1948) was an Italian composer, mainly of opera.
Giordano tried a more romantic approach with his next opera, Regina Diaz (1894), but this was also a failure, taken off the stage after just two performances.
Giordano then moved to Milan, and returned to verismo with his best-known work, Andrea Chénier (1896), based on the life of the French poet, André Chénier.

On the advice of the conductor Leopoldo Mugnone, the publisher Sonzogno commissioned him to compose Mala Vita (later reworked with the title Il Voto), staged in Rome in 1892 (and immediately afterwards in Vienna and Berlin); this opera proved that with his sanguine, exuberant temperament he was a fully paid-up member of the verismo movement.
For the sake of convenience Giordano decided to move to Milan, where the librettist lived, and on account of his precarious finances made his home in a deposit of funeral sculptures which gave onto the same courtyard as the building where Illica lived and received the frequent visits of Puccini, who was writing Bohème.
Giordano improvised the role of singing teacher and corrected the errors of emission and pitch in a voice that he realised was exceptional.
