Vi začal používání umbracullum symbolizovat světské moci papežství; to bylo předtím vysílal postavením muže za Popeem, a vystupuje v heraldické paže hlavního komorníka (kdo se pojí s kostelem během Sede Vacante, papežský interregnum) a bývalá ramena papežských států.
Praxe chůze s umbracullum byl přerušen, ačkoli to pokračuje vystupovat v heraldice a pozůstatkách insigne bazilika, obvykle zobrazoval k pravici hlavního oltáře.
