The possibility, however, of the place of birth of Emperor Akbar away from the fort may be justified by the fact that the first halt of Emperor Humayun in Umerkot was outside the fort.
This school of thought, however, think instead that the Mian did not build it afresh but renovated the old fort which was situated at the very place of the present fort.
In the southeastern portion are the buildings housing provincial government offices while on the other side in the northeastern corner is the newly built, ugly looking and still unfinished building of the 'gymkhana'.

Marvi was a young Thari girl abducted by Umar-the then Ruler because of her beauty and wanted to marry her but upon her refusal he kept her in prison in the historic Umerkot Fort for many years and finally end up releasing her.

Until 1990, the present district of Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mirpur Khas comprised one district with Mirpur Khas its headquarters.
Mirpurkhas and Thar established the town of Mithi as the new headquarters of the Tharparkar district, while Umerkot was bifurcated on 17th April 1-993.
It is bounded on the north by Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts, on east by Barmer and Jaisselmir districts of India, on west by district Badin and on south by Rann of Kutch.

HYDERABAD, June 22: Hundreds of families have migrated to urban areas in the tail of Nara Canal and the distributaries emanating from Farash Regulator due to the acute shortage of irrigation and drinking water.
Over the last couple of years, the shifting of villagers reached an alarming level and according to a recent survey the whole of tail cultivatable area of the Nara Canal and Farash distributaries has been deserted.
The worst-hit areas appeared to be Pithoro and Umerkot talukas of Mirpurkhas district.

A deep tube-well in village Soomon Taluka in district Umerkot was drilled some two months ago from which a fountain of water has sprung and it is oozing out water from the delivery pipe without pumping and flowing for 24 hours.
Village Soomon is situated at a distance of 15 kilometres in north of famous Khokhrapar Railway station having nine sub-villages or paras (parts) with a population of about 1500 human souls and about 5000 live stock.
The young educated villagers formed a welfare association in the name of “ Thar Sudhar Sangat” and then approached “ Thar Deep”, an NGO which agreed to financing a tube well project on a condition that unskilled labour would be provided by the village association.

The arid zones of Tharparkar, UmerKot, Thatta, and Sanghar districts have been severely affected by this recent drought and have been declared as calamity stricken areas by the Government.
On an emergency basis, seeds of millet and guar should be provided in the affected areas of Tharparkar, Umerkot and Dadu Districts before the sowing season that starts from early July.
Feed and roughage to the affected livestock population in all severely affected districts is needed for a period of a minimum of three months to last until pasture is available.

Two persons, one of them an army lance naik, were killed and four pedestrians were injured when a speedy pick-up collided head-on with another pick-up on the Umerkot-Chore road near Umerkot on Sunday.
The injured, whose names could not be ascertained, were admitted to a hospital in Chore.
The bodies were taken to the Umerkot Civil Hospital from where the body of Ajaib was despatched to Jhelum.

A raid was conducted, on the complaint of three peasants, at "Cheema Farm" in Taluka Pithoro of district Umerkot.
The additional district magistrate Umerkot and SDM Pithoro along with heavy contingent of police -- in presence of a three-member team of International Human Rights Commission -- got released 24 bounded labourers, including nine women and eight children of up to one month of age.
When contacted, DC Umerkot Mushtaque Sheikh told The News that the matter was being investigated by District Vigilance Committee and in the light of its recommendations "I on my part will ensure justice to the victims."

UMERKOT: A peace caravan to Khokhropar zero point under the aegis of Pakistan India Peoples Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) was stopped at Umerkot but allowed after one hour to proceed.
A peace convoy comprised of about 100 participants traveling in buses, cars and wagons from Mirpur Khas to Khokhropar was stopped by a heavy contingent of police led by DPO Umerkot Lal Mohammed.
The DPO said he was unaware about permission by authorities for rally to the Khokhropar.

In the mid-seventies there was a big inl.:rease in the GMCs and by 1987 there were over 100 plying from Naukot to the desert and over 50 from Umerkot.
These GMCs continue to ply their routes on the non-metalled roads of the desert despite the radical increase in the number of two and four-wheel drive vehicles, which are more fuel efficient and cost less to maintain, over the last decade.

A new district of Kashmore, with headquarters at Kandhkot, has been created out of the existing Jacobabad district and comprises talukas of Kashmore and Kandhkot.
The government has also revived the district of Umerkot comprising talukas of Umerkot, Samaro, Kunri and Pithoro.
In view of opposition's objections voiced recently over the government's plan to fragment the existing districts the chief minister was asked if public opinion had been invited on the matter.
