Umm al-Qaiwain (Arabic language: أمّالقيوين) is one of the emirates in the United Arab Emirates.
In 1775 Sheikh Majid Al Mu`alla, founder of the ruling Al Mu`alla lineage of the Al `Ali clan, established an independent sheikdom in Umm al-Qaiwain.
It is in the north of the country and is ruled by Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmad Al Mu'alla (شيخ راشد بن احمد المعلا).

The emirate set up the Umm Al Qaiwain Lands and Property Department in May 2002 to stimulate the sector and attract foreign investment.

 Archaeology in Umm al Qaiwain
Two thousand years ago, the now somnolent emirate of Umm al Qaiwain was the site of one of the most important city states in the whole of the Gulf region, according to leading archaeologists now investigating the area.
At that time, according to Umm an Nar evidence, the camel would already seem to have been domesticated, permitting transport across lengthy land distances, while sea-borne trade in the Gulf and across to the Indian sub-continent was well-established.
Hidden from the coast at khor al Beidha by a range of sand dunes up to 18 metres high, the site was first investigated by an Iraqi team in 1974, who investigated a large building in the centre.

A new water desalination facility is being built here, Sheikh Marwan bin Rashid Al Mualla, Chairman of Umm Al Qaiwain Lands and Property Department, announced recently.
The facility, using the reverse osmosis method of separating salt and other impurities from water, is part of Umm Al Quwain government's efforts to provide the emirate's people and its residents needed infrastructure and public services.
