Umpqua County, the twelfth county formed in Oregon, was formed January 24, 1851 from the southern portion of Benton County and the western portion of Lane County.
Umpqua County, and especially the mouth of the Umpqua River, experienced a significant amount of European exploration.
Umpqua County was the home to several tribes of Indians, including the upper and lower Umpqua, the Calapooya, the Coos, the Yoncalla, the southern Molalla, and the Coquille.

Umpqua was a Casco-class monitor intended for service in the shallow bays, rivers, and inlets of the Confederacy.
