Un Chien Andalou/L'Age D'Or DVD review
By now part of the surrealist movement, Buñuel seemed to be spoiling for a fight, and at the sixth public screening he got one when (in a move organised by right-wing agitators) the screen was attacked and the cinema trashed, prompting police intervention and the official banning of the film.
In Un Chien Andalou Short looks at the notorious opening in detail, and in order for him to do so the film stops and the opening sequence is repeated, making this one of the only commentaries that is actually longer than the film it is discussing.
Un Chien Andalou and L'Age D'Or are the two most important works in the history of avant garde cinema and were the founding fathers of surrealist film.

Un Chien Andalou - Movie Review
Called by director Luis Buñuel a "call to murder," and born of the Surrealist movement in art, Un Chien Andalou is one of the chief cultural artifacts from a time when film aspired to something larger than mere storytelling.
Un Chien andalou was my introduction to the power of the irrational and to the concept that art could exist for its own sake.
Un Chien Andalou, like Buñuel's glorious 1930 feature L'Âge d'or, has been made available on DVD at long last with extras including a scholarly commentary track and a pair of interviews with Buñuel and his followers.

 Un chien andalou (1928) + L'Age D'or (1930)
Lacking plot or seeming purpose, Un chien andalou dispenses with the linearity of time and character to instead explore dreams and images.
Funny, disturbing, thought-provoking and challenging, Un chien andalou demands to be seen still.
Whilst it was politically radical enough to provoke riots and to be effectively banned in France for 50 years, it has somehow lost the energy and the fuck-you subversion of the earlier work.

Acclaimed as a surrealist masterpiece, Un Chien andalou aggressively disconnects itself from narrative flow.
A marvellous aspect of something as wilfully bizarre as Un Chien andalou is that almost any interpretation can be drawn from the images shown.
Un Chien andalou does not require such deep analysis though, being much more a film which should be purely experienced.

Un Chien Andalou is Bunuel's first film and collaboration with Salvador Dali, a surreal exploration of desire and passion.
Un Chien Andalou and L'age D'or embrace all the principles of surrealism, and are vivid examples of the power of cinema to express the power, uniqueness and oddness of dreams.
L'age D'or is longer at 63 minutes, and unlike Un Chien Andalou, which was a huge commercial success, it was banned almost instantly due to its blasphemous attitude to religion.

 Un Chien Andalou
It "came from an encounter between two dreams." (1) The script was an easy and joyful joint collaboration between Buñuel and Dali (Buñuel would continue to write scripts in collaboration for the rest of his life), and Buñuel shot the film quickly over two weeks on a small budget supplied by his mother.
Un Chien Andalou was, as were many of Buñuel's later films, a huge success amongst the French bourgeoisie, and a parallel can be seen between the careers of Buñuel and Chabrol.
The eye-slicing in Un Chien Andalou, and Christ portrayed as the Duo de Blangis (obviously the Marquis de Sade) in L'Age d'Or are prime examples of this.

Un Chien Andalou isn't simply one of the great works of the surrealist movement, but a segment of cinematic DNA that irrevocably altered the aesthetics of film.
Filmed in Paris in 1929, UN CHIEN ANDALOU is regarded as the first film produced purely from within the Surrealist movement and is a landmark in the history of cinema.

Un Chien Andalou (The Andalousian Dog) is one of the most breathtaking features ever produced, short or feature length, and the way it slips so gracefully between what could be considered something of a reality and a collague of images is nothing short of a miracle.
True this could be seen as a the common movie-goer as a pretentious attempt at an "art" film, but Bunuel and his collaborator Salvadore Dali have seized the perfect technique in blending the ideal of storytelling and that of the ideal of a painter.
Un Chien Andalou/Land Without Bread is a mongrelization of meaningless movie-making that belongs on some dusty shelf in some vault catalogued for historical reference only.

Un chien andalou (An Andalusian Dog in English) is a 16 minute surrealist short film made in France by Luis Buñuel (Writer/Director) and Salvador Dalí in 1929.
The man dragging a piano, donkey and priests has been interpreted as an allegory of man's progress towards his goal being hindered by the baggage of society's conventions that he is forced to bear.
Laurel and Hardy's 1929 comedy short, Wrong Again has a scene with a horse on a piano, a possible reference to Un chien andalou's donkeys in pianos.

Reality and Paradox in Un Chien Andalou
One way to approach such a film is to treat it as a manifestation of psychological processes, or perhaps as a work which consciously plays with perceived psychological processes.
A psychoanalysis of that sort would no doubt be justified both by the writings of Buñuel as well as by the content and style of the film which appear to be laden with Freudian (or perhaps Lacanian) meaning.
In Buñuel's films, some of the most striking and beautiful images occur precisely where such a paradox exists, but what gives them their distinct emotional impact is the fact that they are often conflicts of desires.

Despite its brevity, 'Un Chien Andalou' is a roller-coaster ride through the shadowy corridors of the psyche, defying all generic categorisation.
Not only was 'Un Chien Andalou' Buñuel's first film, but also his first collaboration with Salvador Dali (with whom he worked again a year later on L'Âge d'Or).
DVD Extras: This BFI DVD release, coupled in a boxset with Buñuel/Dali's 'L'Âge D'Or', is the cleanest and clearest print of the (originally silent) 'Un Chien Andalou' available, accompanied by the romantic soundtrack (from Richard Wagner's 'Tristan and Isolde') that was added in 1960 according to Buñuel's personal instructions.

It is, by its very definition, a film that is weird only for the sake of being weird.
Un Chien Andalou is simply a series of bizarre and at times rather extreme images conjured up by the collective imaginations of Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel.
While it doesn’t get as out there as more modern films like the work of Jodorowsky or Arrabel, it is still plenty weird for wierd’s sake and Facets has assembled some nice extras to go along with it.

JR.com: Un Chien Andalou (1929) - DVD in Movies: Dramas:
Hailed as a surrealistic cinematic masterpiece, UN CHIEN ANDALOU forms the meeting of two brilliant minds--those of arch painter and sculptor Salvador Dali, and fellow Spaniard and legendary filmmaker Luis Bunuel.
Based on dreams that Bunuel and Dali had experienced, their one rule for shooting was to reject conventional narrative so that any meaning attached to the piece was purely in the eye of the beholder.
Which leads neatly into the most infamous scene in UN CHIEN ANDALOU; namely the close-up shot of an eyeball being pierced by a razor, which may not appeal to the fainthearted viewer, but is certainly one of the most talked about scenes in cinema history.

Similarly, it is all too easy these days to see a film like ‘Un chien andalou’ out of context, without understanding the historical circumstances from which it emerged and reacted against.
Buñuel and Dali attempted to depict this ‘higher’ form of reality (sur-reality) in ‘Un chien andalou’.
The British Film Institute released a DVD version of ‘Un chien andalou’ in October 2004 (in PAL, Region 2) with an apparently better quality image track (although I haven’t seen it).

Remote Control : Un Chien Andalou (1929)
While Surrealist guru Andre Breton’s Marxist leanings had a more political role in mind for the new movement, Buñuel and Dali were satisfied just to make an audience squirm with supreme discomfort at their images.
Taking a cue from Breton’s manifesto on "automatic writing" — putting endless, disconnected sentences on paper without regard to their rational meaning — Buñuel and Dali’s script for Un Chien Andalou ("An Andalusian Dog") rejected anything even approaching rationality, accepting instead images from their dreams.
The pair was prepared for trouble — Buñuel kept stones in his pocket to throw in case the premiere audience started a riot — but the film made Buñuel and Dali the darlings of the Underground.
