  Wikipedia: Giuseppe Verdi
In 1842 his first real success was Nabucco, which followed two earlier operas, Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio (opened in Milan on November 17, 1839) and Un giorno di regno which was his only attempt at writing a comedy until Falstaff.
Un Giorno di Regno was a decided failure and no wonder, it was written shortly after his first wife and child died.
He died of a stroke in 1901 in Milan after the completion of his "Casa di Riposo", a retirement villa for poor artists.

As Verdi, himself, famously told the story, he despaired of ever writing another opera, and fell into an uncreative depression until a publisher forced the libretto for what came to be his third opera, "Nabucco," into his pocket.
If "Un giorno di regno" is not exactly Rossinian and not precisely Donizettian, it is absolutely not Verdian.
Still, for all that, "Un giorno" is a charming piece of work.

Verdi's reaction was sharp ("Per l'amor di Dio non finisca col Rondò ma faccia il terzetto").

Most people with a smattering of knowledge about Verdi's life will recall that Un Giorno di Regno was his only comedy before Falstaff; that it was his second opera and failed miserably at a terrible time in the composer's life, when he had recently been bereaved of his wife and both children.
Probably he was right, for opera buffa belonged to a style that Verdi's own development would soon relegate to the past, and its chief practitioners-Rossini and Donizetti-handled the form more gracefully than he.
Pedestrian pages abound, along with some clumsy technique and unimaginative scoring, but much of the music has a directness and an energetic drive that are hard to resist.
