Unalakleet is located on Norton Sound at the mouth of the Unalakleet River, 148 miles southeast of Nome and 395 miles northwest of Anchorage.
Archaeologists have dated house remnants along the beach ridge from 200 B.C. to 300 A.D. The name Unalakleet means "place where the east wind blows." Unalakleet has long been a major trade center as the terminus for the Kaltag Portage, an important winter travel route connecting to the Yukon River.
In 1898, reindeer herders from Lapland were brought to Unalakleet to establish sound herding practices.

Unalakleet is one of the largest villages on the northwest coast of Alaska, located on a spit of land at the mouth of the Unalakleet River, where it spills into the Bering Sea.
Lying between the river on one side and the sea on the other, this village shares the riches of both: salmon, trout, herring, seal, walrus, and whale.
Unalakleet is also the home of Covenant Bible Camp on the North River, about 10 miles from town.

In 1981, the chinook salmon commercial catch and escapement data for the sub-district of Unalakleet in the Norton Sound was peaking at the same high numbers it was two years ago (Figure 2).
In present day Unalakleet, as previously stated, the fish numbers are remaining steady with the exception of the chum salmon.
Ideally, a hatchery would be situated at Egavik or the Golsovia rivers (the Egavik river is 20 miles north of Unalakleet and the Golsovia rivers are the same distance to the south) (Figure 1).
