Pope Boniface VIII   18  November 1302   The Bull Unam Sanctam
The Bull "Unam Sanctam", in which Pope Boniface VIII asserted his rights against King Phillip the Fair of France, is a landmark in the history of the doctrine of Papal Primacy.
"Unam Sanctam" is frequently quoted, and misquoted, by anti-Catholics trying to prove that Boniface VIII, and Popes in general, are arrogant and evil men, intent on extending their own power.
The following English translation of "Unam Sanctam" is taken from a doctoral dissertation written in the Dept. of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America, and published by CUA Press in 1927.

Pope Boniface VII in 1302 in "Unam Sanctam"
Having said that, the Unam Sanctam does need to be explained because some have said that the Catholic Church has contradicted herself in Vatican II.
Theologically, I would say the Unam Sanctam is technically accurate, however, it is written in such a way that it was attempting to achieve a particular purpose, which was to discourage King Phillip from trying to dominate and take over the Church.

In this way, Clement V was able to give France and its ruler a guarantee of security from the ecclesiastico-political results of the opinions elaborated in the Bull, while its dogmatic decision suffered no detriment of any kind.
In the struggles of the Gallican party against the authority of the Roman See, and also in the writings of non-Catholic authors against the definition of Papal Infallibility, the Bull "Unam Sanctam" was used against Boniface VIII as well as against the papal primacy in a manner not justified by its content.
The statements concerning the relations between the spiritual and the secular power are of a purely historical character, so far as they do not refer to the nature of the spiritual power, and are based on the actual conditions of medieval Western Europe.

Present-day Catholicism and the Unam Sanctam Contradiction
Please note: it is apparent after reading the Unam Sanctam, that this belief about salvation was contradicted and not added on or clarified as some Catholic apologists might want us to think.
Moreover, neither are the opposing declarations of the Unam Sanctam and Vatican Council II different aspects of the same idea.
Finally, this most serious contradiction between the two not only refutes their own doctrine of the infallibility of the pope, but also falsifies the RC claim that their Tradition is the universal consent of the Fathers.

 Definition of Unam Sanctam
On November 18, 1302, Pope Boniface VIII issued the Papal bull Unam sanctam ("The One Holy"), which historians consider one of the most extreme statements of Papal spiritual supremacy ever made.
It arose due to the Pope's conflict with Philip IV of France over attempts of each to prevent the other from receiving money from taxes.
This was the atmosphere in which Unam sanctam was promulgated weeks later.

 Unam Sanctam "Problem" Resolved
JD> But, Bruce Binnie has suggested that Unam Sanctam was addressed to Catholics and should be understood in that context and, as I understand Bruce, the point of absolute necessity should be withstood wholly within that context and not referring to anything outside of that context.
It has been my contention that the last sentence of Unam Sanctam about subjection to the Pope should be understood in an absolute sense of Catholics and interpreted in conjunction with the opening that membership in the Church is also a necessary condition of salvation.
Underlying the bull Unam Sanctam, therefore, is a theology of the Church and its mission which constitutes the doctrinal framework within which the function of the Sovereign Pontiff, its head, is inserted.

Because it has implications for other doctrines of the Roman Church, as well as on the possibility of ecumenical cooperation, a true interpretation of Unam sanctam remains important to ecclesiastical scholars to this day.

 Caritas - Papal Office - January 2003
Anyone acquainted with the practice of the Church and the Bulla, “Unam Sanctam,” by Pope Boniface VIII, knows that there are two orders, the spiritual order and the civil order: the first is God’s one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church, and the second is the various civil states all over the world.
We quote from Unam Sanctam Denzinger #469 as follows: “And we are taught by evangelical words that in this power of his are two swords, namely, spiritual and temporal…; Therefore, each is in the power of the Church, that is a spiritual and a material sword.
In the above quotation from Unam Sanctam, Boniface VIII clearly declares that the state exists for the Church, and not to tax it out of existence.

Scholasticism was still whole and unbroken, in spite of Roger Bacon, who attacked its methods with weapons of his own forging, yet asserting loudly the single-eyed subservience of all the sciences to theology.
This assertion from a man of Bacon’s views, was as vain as the Unam sanctam of Pope Boniface VIII., fulminated in 1302, arrogating for the papacy every power on earth.
In earlier decades such pretensions had been almost acquiesced in; but the Unam sanctam was a senile outcry from a papacy vanquished by the new-grown power of the French king, sustained by the awakening of a French nation.
