They appear more animalistic and less intelligent than humans, but I don't see why this would be a problem for the Goa'uld, as they'd wouldn't want their slaves to be too clever, and the host's mind seems pretty immaterial to a parasite that completely takes control of the body.
Also IIRC the Unas POV shot was somewhat greenish -- perhaps the Unas don't have as broad a range of color vision as humans.
The Unas may well have a more basic animist belief system, and may not envision their divinities in personified form.

GateWorld - Stargate SG-1 Episode Review: "Beast of Burden"
Here we address another moral issue, the concept of "beasts." That Unas might be considered beasts was a concept I doubt any would have argued prior to last season's "The First Ones." Previous experiences with that species ("Thor's Hammer," "Demons") have not been pleasant ones.
The Unas, to Jack, are just "beasts." While he does exhibit a sense of sympathy for the beasts upon arriving at the planet, he remains unwilling to risk human lives on behalf of Unas lives.

Unas (Stargate) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A fictional species in the sci-fi television show Stargate SG-1, the Unas, meaning the "First Ones", are a race of large and primitive humanoids that evolved on the same planet as the Goa'uld.
He established a line of communication with him, and later helped him escape (and start a revolt) from a human based society that used the Unas as slave labor in "Beast of Burden".
A Goa'uld possessed Unas is even more powerful, with exceptional regeneration abilities that allow them to survive and recover from multiple bullet wounds even without the aid of a sarcophagus, able to speak English and stay in long periods of sleep to survive for a thousand years.
